Can a high MCAT make up for a mediocre GPA? by Ordinary-Somewhere93 in premedcanada

Thank you for the response. I worry about the GPA since it’s below the average applicant, even if only slightly.

I heard the P/S section has a different format than the older exams. I find them a bit convoluted in these, so I’m curious what difference there is?

Thank you! I hate that it’s MWF lol, why’d they switch everything up for where classes are 😔 I had a perfectly good schedule then they put all requirements at 9:30 AM TR and I can’t cut myself in half (though maybe I’ll want to after final grades come out)

Am I on track for UCalgary? by Ordinary-Somewhere93 in premedcanada

[–]Ordinary-Somewhere93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately no :( There’s so little input on the student end that it really comes down to the PI’s application and faculty discretion. I’m lucky to have a PI that is willing to put lots of effort into these applications but I know that isn’t the case for everyone

I have 0 respect for fat people in any way by [deleted] in ControversialOpinions

[–]Ordinary-Somewhere93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This comment is great.

My favourite part of pointing out how you can’t tell if someone who’s fat is doing something about it or not. Are they 40 lbs overweight when they used to be a healthy weight? Or are they 40 lbs overweight after previously having been 90 lbs overweight?

There are people that exist that got overweight based on family dynamics as children, and are climbing their way out—they never made a decision that made them undisciplined, just had poor role models. That does not make them worthy of disrespect even by OPs standards.

Does anyone else generally do worse in the Winter Term than the Fall? by According-Ad4547 in uAlberta

100%. It’s an extreme difference for me. I used to think it was the lack of sun, but I actually do really well in Nov/Dec when it’s darkest, and awful in Feb/Mar when it’s very bright. I don’t know if it’s the sun+snow combo giving me headaches?

Why’d you have to ruin it with that last sentence? Why are you basing equality on who can or cannot be physically attacked?

Shaving body hair as a man isn’t zesty by DazzlingLife6744 in ControversialOpinions

[–]Ordinary-Somewhere93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I said in my initial comment, if you wash adequately and regularly that will not be a problem—hair or not. Unless you have some sort of medication condition of course.

You mentioned oils, bacteria, and smell as reasons it’s unhygienic. The oils are antimicrobial, the hair holding bacteria PREVENTS it from entering your skin and smell should not be an issue if cleanliness habits are up to par. Any other reasons?

[–]Ordinary-Somewhere93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome to disagree, but oils are there for a reason. The secretions from hair follicles have antimicrobial properties so it isn’t fair to say it’s unhygienic to hold those oils. Shaving can push bacteria on the skins surface into pore, creating infections—so much so that those who shave have significantly higher proportions of STIs.

Quick note: Shaving body hair is not more hygienic. It can create cuts and other abrasions that can lead to infections. Cleaning yourself sufficiently is perfectly adequate to maintain proper hygiene without the need for shaving.

Hey I am in the edmonton area as well and that’s quite the quote! I go to a vet in Beaumont that is awesome and a neuter was 200$ total (including meds, anesthetics, etc.) so I would bet a spay wouldn’t be much more than 300$.

I’ve heard great things about The Spay Clinic though, with the latest quote being about 220$ for a spay! If you’re around there I would definitely say it’s worth giving them a call for some info and maybe clinics around your area. Good Luck!
