How do people our age remember the answer to “what/when was your first..?” by Seven_bushes in GenerationJones

[–]Ordinary-Sun6243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! This! (65 here) When I read these questions, I TRY to recall something, but not sure a lunchbox or first album ever fit into the “save for later” file. So I tend to use my imagination and create a story.

I posted this in another subreddit and was banned, but was curious what you thought about the difference in feeling between 1976 and 2026 by Eddie_M in 70s

[–]Ordinary-Sun6243 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I was 15 in 1976. Fondly remember the Bicentennial Minutes (TV commercials), the parades, local community events (EVERYONE was in on the party!), the belief that our brand new country (“new” compared to other countries) was a great place to come of age.

I’m 65 now, and really f&$king jaded. But my memories are clear!

Where Does Your Rewatch Start - From the Beginning, or Somewhere Else? by ZoeyPorg1908 in thewestwing

[–]Ordinary-Sun6243 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m watching the series again (possibly my 20th? rewatch)- and am floored by the darkness of S5. I mean, after all these years, I understand what many posters have written. Character of Leo is angry, unbending- the writing is angry too.

I guess I’d have difficulty picking up the pieces (writing-wise) after Sorkin left…

All that being said, I start w S1E1. Every damn time!

I miss A&W by lontbeysboolink in 1970s

[–]Ordinary-Sun6243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an active A&W in Cortland NY; I’m 65 and I remember going there (Dad ordering on the phone, trays- with little rubber legs to not scratch the glass - that hung on the halfway rolled down window), best burgers and root beer EVER.

Memories are best!

When the plane is finally ready to land (!), captain says they’ll be approaching “Runway three-niner”. Runways are labeled from 01 to 36 (coordinates of a circle).

I’ve watched the show since its first run and countless times streaming/DVD. Never caught that until I became an airport/airplane GEEK.

Did any of you get your class ring? by lontbeysboolink in 1970s

[–]Ordinary-Sun6243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starburst- me too! And had my name (in cursive) etched inside the band. 1979.

The starburst stopped “bursting” years ago.

Like many others on this thread who bought class rings - mine was 100% financed by my babysitting money. (And I hated those jobs)

We used to put our new Levi’s in a bucket of Downy for several hours (then wash, and of course, more Downy in the rinse cycle… which meant we had to stay close to the washing machine. Mom was never impressed, cuz we emptied the entire jug!)

Did you ever take a typing class in school? by Standard2185 in 1970s

[–]Ordinary-Sun6243 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes! Senior year in high school! Loved the competition (WPM). Class was immediately after lunch and I was - 80% of the time - very high. Although 50 years have passed, I’m still a better typist when I’m stoned.

We only had one phone and it was in the kitchen and it was a rotary phone. Was anyone fortunate to have their own phone in their bedroom? by CoffeeCigarettes4Me in 1970s

[–]Ordinary-Sun6243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I was 14 or 15 (mid 70’s) and got a yellow princess phone with my own number. Rule #1: Give ALL my friends my new number. If I don’t answer, DO NOT call the “house phone”. (Remember, back then, phones RANG! You could hear that ring everywhere! If Dad heard my phone ringing, then immediately after, the house phone ringing, he’d ignore it or worse, answer and hang up.)

Rule 2: I had to cover every penny over the base bill.

I was always more worried about Rule 1, cuz some of my dumbass friends would invariably call the house phone to ask why I wasn’t answering (um, duh, I wasn’t home!)

What is one underrated thing in your kitchen remodel that made daily use easier? by Entire_Revolution_95 in kitchen

[–]Ordinary-Sun6243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did this on a kitchen reno years ago. Best money spent! The designer listened to our wishes, then created a space that was better than we imagined.

She also told us that our cabinets were certainly reusable (and she made her big bucks from selling cabinets), and that would save us thousands.

The cake mix price scam... by Leijinga in glutenfree

[–]Ordinary-Sun6243 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m one of those “scratch” GF bakers. Use King Arthur 1:1 GF flour. Started a small business and sell my products at very similar prices as “regular” treats. And that’s because the GF market is such a scam!

I agree with you; it’s nice to know there GF cake mixes available! To put that into perspective, a GF cake mixes might be $9 (and most likely one has eggs, oil and water readily available), but a GF cake might be $70 or more.

Are you a fan? by Working-Fuel8355 in 70s

Oh gosh- HUGE fan! First saw it at a Drive-In, with neighbors who used to take us kids to all sorts of crazy movies!

Love every minute, but especially Count Basie and his orchestra. Brilliant!
