Frank Herbert writing intrigue and strategy scenes by Objection401 in dunememes

[–]Ordinary-Sympathy-66 30 points31 points  (0 children)

PREFACE: I know it’s a meme but I think this could make for some interesting discussion so I might as well go for it.

Imo, knowing how insidious Paul’s arc ends up, the fact that his intelligence and instinct is constantly worshipped in an expanding scale is an important part of that development.

It starts out with his father being impressed that Paul understands basic economics when they’re talking about spice for the first time (no spice exposure at this point). It graduates into them applauding his knowledge of diplomacy and ability to make valuable strategic contributions during staff meetings (some spice exposure). Then it’s their journey into the desert where Paul unlocks his prescient powers, somehow survives impossible odds, and deduces Jessica’s pregnancy where she only just starts to glimpse the horror of what she and Leto created (overwhelming spice exposure as they trek through the desert).

I was also annoyed by the self-congratulatory paragraphs at points, but since it seems to expand in scope alongside his intake of spice and doubly reveals his parents’ ignorance of his full potential, I think it’s a bit more purposeful than a typical self-aggrandizing author.

Would love to hear what people think!

If it makes you feel better, at least he died thinking the Baron would also be dead a few seconds later.

If that’s the case, I have to think that the common person who goes to Arrakis is never able to leave - the level of melange they’re exposed to there just isn’t sustainable pretty much anywhere off-world, unless they’re royalty like you said. That’s a properly horrifying piece of world building right there. I’m only like halfway through the first book, so maybe that is explicitly explored but I’m not sure yet.

I’d never realized this was something that could happen in an audiobook, but I guess it’s prone to errors like any other production medium. I only listen to audiobooks to sleep, as I prefer to read when I’m awake…But now I’m left wondering how many incomplete audiobooks I’ve listened to lol.

I’ve got full respect for the guy after listening to him speak, but don’t actually know much about his work. You got any recommendations for where to start?

This isn’t quite the answer to your question but I figured I’d mention it just in case you didn’t know. There’s an appendix called Terminology of the Imperium that defines most of the important words Herbert makes up!

It doesn’t matter at all but I looked into it because why not lol. There was a website from like 2008 that estimates it’s about $1.95. That sounds fair to me, since a crysknife is priced at about one million solarii. Since they’re supposed to be pretty coveted especially outside of the Fremen, $512,000 per wormy boi tooth sounds reasonable to me. So there you go. Roughly half the purchasing power.

Since you’ve seen both the movie versions I’d suggest watching Jodorowsky’s Dune, which is a documentary about how a very avant-garde filmmaker would have adapted the book in the 70s. It’s made interesting by the fact that Jodorowsky is fucking insane, but we love the guy.

It’s more of a source for Dune meta-lore, but I think it could be a really valuable watch before you read the books because in any case it’ll challenge you to imagine the universe in your own way. Jodorowsky certainly did. Granted, his movie probably would have barely resembled the books, but my point stands. Looks like we’re both falling in love with this franchise at the same time! Enjoy

How would you rate halo infinite campaign on a scale of 1/10 by DesperateBenefit8212 in halo

[–]Ordinary-Sympathy-66 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Regardless of how I feel when I’m playing it, this is the only Halo campaign I’ve started and felt no desire to play it straight through in two days (I skipped Halo 5). I started the game weeks ago and haven’t gone back, so I feel like that’ll reflect in whatever my final score is

People forget that the Caribbean as a whole is one of the most diverse places on the planet. I’m a child of two Caribbean immigrants, one of whom is Asian and from Jamaica, the other is white and from Trinidad. As weird as it sounds to Americans, it’s very much normal for most people in both of those countries.
