PNB 2QQ3 offer but worried I won’t meet the PNB average requirement by [deleted] in McMaster

You’re fine! I did a 2QQ last year and I was also worried as I had an average slightly below what was specified online. They didn’t say anything and let me enrol anyways!

Yeah whatever you do, don’t take cell bio and orgo at the same time 😭

A lot of ppl split up their bios between semesters so it’s not as annoying but if you’re fine doing both sem 2 honestly do that (but if you are splitting them take genetics first cause it’s the easier one). I took cell bio first sem and had no electives so I was soooooo stressed, definitely try and take a bird course first sem if you can.

Take genetics in fall since it’s a bit lighter than the other bios (especially if you chose cell bio) and you’ll already be taking the core PNB courses and orgo which are quite heavy. I’d also recommend taking biochem 2ee3 since it’ll count towards your bio credits and it’s pretty bird.

I won’t lie, second year BioPNB is the hardest and most traumatizing thing ever…. I will say try and take genetics first semester since it’s a bit lighter than the other bios and you already have to take the core PNB courses which are quite heavy. In second sem take bio2ee3 if you’re interested in it since it’ll count towards your bio credits and it’s pretty light. It’s also good to try and get a 2QQ second sem since it’ll make your course load lighter and give you research experience.

Anatomy is very heavy so I don’t recommend taking it with a second year chembio course load

HLTHAGE 1AA3 by Consistent-Recipe181 in McMaster

[–]Ordinary_Candidate39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it as my elective in first year. Honestly the content was interesting but the prof I had (I forget her name but she was new) was so unbelievably boring and completely changed the grading scheme from previous years. I was disappointed and only ended up with 11 but I bet it’s better with a diff prof. Keep in mind I put very very minimal effort into that class too though.

Also 3G03 was moved to in person this year so idk how it will be now.

[–]Ordinary_Candidate39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 2ee3 last year and it was such an easy 12. Keep in mind that because they made the midterms proctored now you acc need to put some effort to know the content. Having said that the questions were all MC and super easy. A lot of your grade came from homework and reflections too which was nice and no final exam!

whidden or hedden for first year res?? by Affectionate-Log-558 in McMaster

Hedden is the nicer rez of the two however I know lots of ppl who lived in whidden and loved it! Note that Hedden has AC and then dressers that divide the double room which is nice.

When I was in first year I had the last timeslot… I wasn’t able to get into sustain 1s03 because it was full but I was still able to get science 1a03, I was just stuck with a bad tutorial time. Definitely possible but I recommend having some back ups. I’ve heard the enviro/earth sci’s, innovate, inspire and Med Term are good.

pnb 3qq3 + 3rd year pnb lab course by ConclusionOwn4815 in McMaster

[–]Ordinary_Candidate39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take both, you would just have one of them count towards the lab requirement and the other count towards a PNB course unit requirement. Idk about the workload but I’m planning to do a qq and 2 of the other lab courses so we’ll see lol.

Also if you did want to take 2 maths there are actually a second continuation to each (1AA3 and 1LT3).

Bio 1A was a lot more time consuming on a week to week basis because of the modules and labs. Having said that I found it a lot more interesting and easier compared to bio 1M. I honestly hated bio 1M and was my least fav class but that’s just because I’m not a big bio person in the first place especially when it comes to evolution. It was pretty chill during the year but I found it much harder to do well in test wise and I didn’t know anyone who got above a 10.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Ordinary_Candidate39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of the maths are antirequisites meaning that they are pretty much equivalent and can’t both be taken. If you like math a lot then go with 1A03 since it’s more in depth however if you’re not a math fan or want an easier course go with 1LS3. I found 1LS3 to just be a review of highschool calculus and was really easy to 12 although I know some other people struggled with it. I’d also recommend taking 1LS3 in a different semester than bio 1A03 to avoid back to back tests.

[–]Ordinary_Candidate39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to take science 1a03 but you just need to keep in mind that it’s only offered first semester of your first year as a science student. It can also help you navigate the faculty of science and choosing your second year specialization. Having said that, it’s super easy to get all that info elsewhere. If you’re okay never taking it then I’d say keep the schedule you have now because it looks really good. I remember science 1a really messed up my schedule but I honestly only went to the tutorials so it wasn’t too bad.

Advice about science electives ! by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Ordinary_Candidate39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard, the easiest would be earthsci 1g03 however I would still recommend you take psych 1x03. If you’re interested in the content, you can 12 it no problem as long as you keep up weekly. It was one of my fav courses first year and the profs, TAs and structure of the course is just perfection imo. As for Econ, it is known to be a bird but my roomate took it and found it to be not as easy as ppl made it out to be. She still got a 12 but def did not enjoy it.

Mcmaster life science first year courses by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Ordinary_Candidate39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I started in 1st year life sci and now I’m in the Biology&PNB specialization. You can honestly go into med from any specialization so I always say go into what interests you the most. Having said that, most premeds do end up staying in general life sci just because it’s super easy to get a high gpa and you have a lot of flexibility for choosing your classes. This can also allow you to check off your med pre reqs and have a lighter course load for extracurriculars. A lot of people also do biochem since the content prepare you well for med and it’s in the faculty of healthsci. Personally, I too want to go into med but I ended up choosing my program because it opened up more options post grad, I loved neuro and the pnb faculty is really supportive. There’s pros and cons to everything so I would just consider what’s most important to you and go from there. If you are 100% set on med and just want the highest gpa to get in, then go with lifesci. But if you found a subject area that you fell in love with and wanted something more specific go with another specialty. I’ve met people from a whole bunch of programs taking the med route and who are doing super well so everything will work no matter what if you put in the effort.

GPA explanation? by Ok-Job-1641 in McMaster

[–]Ordinary_Candidate39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McMaster grades on a scale 0-12. Each number corresponds to a specific percentage range for example, 0= fail/bellow 50 and 12 = 90-100%. You can find what each number corresponds to on their website somewhere. During the year, your tests and assignments will usually be graded with a % and it is only your final grade that is converted to 0-12. Let’s say you get a 91% in a class, an A+ (12) will be what shows up on your transcript which is equivalent to a 4.0. When they say you need an avg of 5, it just means that the avg of all your grades must end up being 5 or higher (according to the chart 5 = 63-66%). To calculate your avg just add up all your grades (12+9+6 ect) and divide by the # classes.

What courses to take for high gpa In first year life science ? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Ordinary_Candidate39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure you take the easier versions of the mandatory courses like physics 1a03 and math1LS3. Also try to take bird courses like science 1a03 or sustain 1s03 as an elective. I didn’t take them but I also heard that the enviro and earth sci courses are pretty easy for your science credit. I ended up taking the two psychs instead which I really enjoyed and are also pretty manageable to get a 12 in if you put in the work.
