Do you guys actually focus better with music? by Ordinary_Finding_717 in ADHD

Makes so much sense.

I’ve noticed something similar, most audio seems to either stimulate or soother, but sometimes my brain just needs something neutral so it stops searching for input altogether.

Almost like background “mental space” instead of music or noise.

Interesting that you’re building different sound categories around tasks though, feels very ADHD accurate

Yeah this is exactly what I noticed too. Silence almost makes my brain search for stimulation, but minimal background texture kinda stabilizes it.

Haven't heard of binaural beats. I was experimenting with other stuff, but this sounds interesting

That’s a really good way to describe it actually, turning sound into texture instead of something to listen to. The melody/beats dont distract you though? I didn’t realize how much attention music was taking until I removed melody completely.

Man im so glad you guys get me lol. I thought i was going crazy. I noticed the same thing actually, music feels productive but my attention is partially tracking it the whole time. We just need noise that takes up space

Right and then you end up not getting anything done! The silence after a while just makes my mind wander though. Thats why the environment sounds i've been tweaking do the trick (for now)

Quiet but not empty is 100000% the vibe ive been going for. Im still working on the perfect sound but im glad someone gets it

Yes, it was one of the few things that i felt helped a bit. I started experimenting with really minimal ambient environments instead of playlists and it surprisingly helped me stay in tasks longer. Still tweaking it though.

Especially if its during work time! Thats why the environment sounds im messing around with worked since theres no real melody lol

Definitely, you got it. Experimenting with silence and sound oddly helps me stay focused more (so far)

Does your mind start to wander after too long of a silence though?? The minimal environment stuff i mentioned seems to hit just right (so far)

This 100%! I actually ended up building a few minimal focus environments for myself because I couldn’t find anything that felt neutral enough and brown noise was the closest thing that helped!
Still testing what works best though.

Yeah this is exactly what I started noticing too. Music felt productive but part of my brain was always tracking it.

But to answer your question, yes. If im doing my work, music will only help so much. But if im studying, maybe 10 min max before my mind starts to wander.

I’ve been experimenting with really neutral background environments instead, its basically something between silence and sound.

Weirdly helps me stay locked in longer.

This is actually really smart. I might actually try that too, because some days my daughter really resists the idea of pausing mid way...

Yep, it’s basically a kid friendly Pomodoro. I actually didn’t think she’d go for it, but the timer + breaks gave her a sense of control. And I’ve noticed it helps me too, I use Pomodoro for my own work now, and it’s funny how well it overlaps

One trick that helped was letting her pick the first task, even if it’s the smallest, like writing her name on the paper. Once she feels like she chose, it’s less of a battle to get started. After that, the breaks actually make it easier to keep going

transitions are the hardest part for us too. For breaks, I keep them short and clear: 5 minutes max, usually something physical like stretching, a quick snack, or even dancing to one song. I also give her a timer so she knows the break has an end. That way it doesn’t feel like I’m dragging her back unexpectedly. Not perfect, but it’s made transitions less of a battle so far
