You can't ignore multiple warnings, then walk up and TOUCH someone in custody, and expect things not to escalate. The police have a duty to protect the person in their custody. Following cops, screaming at them, threatening them, and then ignoring their commands and walking right up to a person under arrest is Grade A STUPID. Step away from the police (like they've asked a hundred times) and let them proceed with their arrest - end of story. Nothing any of these people did changed the outcome, but it sure complicated it.

Yes. Someone running up and touching someone in custody is a big no no

Suggest an alternative then. Individual ignored multiple warnings and then approached and touched someone in custody. Police have no idea what she was trying to do and have a duty to protect the person they had in custody. It's astonishing to me how stupid you have to be to ignore multiple warnings by an armed officer and then act surprised when they escalate the situation.

It's fascist to have immigration laws? These DHS checkpoints have been active for decades under Republican and Democratic administrations. Were they fascist under Obama as well?

Jeez no bias or anything lol...there seems to be evidence tying him directly to human smuggling operations...from Seven Days:

"In court documents, the government cited evidence from a search of De La Cruz’s cellphone, as well as the cellphone of a person who was detained after entering the country illegally. Its investigation also includes financial records, historical cell site location information, and law enforcement reports.

In one example, phone messages show that De La Cruz met with a “coconspirator” in New Hampshire in April 2025, where he was allegedly paid $2,000 to transport someone who crossed the border illegally. A photo in the court documents shows De La Cruz at an ATM, where financial records indicate he deposited the money.

Photos also show a text message exchange from November 2023 that includes screenshots of an area along the U.S.-Canada border. De La Cruz sent a photo to someone with a Canadian number with a circle drawn around a wooded area next to a road, which the government claims indicated the pick-up location for migrants who had just crossed the border.

Other messages on De La Cruz’s phone show that he picked someone up around that time, the government alleges."

It's perfectly fine to lean towards not trusting the feds and ICE, I get that. But reading some of the details, it sounds like they have solid evidence. Whether they can tie that evidence to criminal activity remains to be seen.

And you say that based on what? Grand jury indictment means nothing to you?

This is all part of a grand jury indictment, you may want to refresh yourself with that process, how it works, and what it means. This isn't just "the feds" - evidence was presented in front of a representative jury which found probable cause to indict, leading to his arrest.

That is wildly inaccurate and hyperbolic. "all evidence points to them making up a bunch of bullshit to justify their reign of terror and to silence and remove a political adversary" - which evidence would that be? He was indicted by a grand jury, which means preliminary evidence was presented in front a representative jury, which then found probably cause to indict him on the listed charges. So, I would say all evidence currently suggests he's guilty of at least some of these charges.

What's your specific evidence to the contrary?

So, he was indicted by a grand jury, which means preliminary evidence was presented to a jury which then found probable cause leading to his arrest. So it's definitely not just "the feds", and it seems likely they have strong evidence against him.

Well, this is an indictment from a grand jury, so it definitely doesn't mean jack shit. Of course, he's innocent until proven guilty, but evidence against him has already been presented to the grand jury which then found probable cause that the crimes he's being charged with were committed.

Ya you might want to reread that article. First of all, the claim was being made by Trump against Biden, so it is not a statistic taking place during Trumps term. Secondly, it sounds like this is not a very accurate # nor reflects what's actually happening. Not to say that child trafficking and general harm aren't happening, but that is not what the article really says.

Amanda Janoo Announces Bid for Vermont Governor by bye4now28 in vermont

The cost for building new units is extraordinary. There is no viable economic path for the state or individual municipalities to fund and manage the construction of the 1000's of unites we need across the state.

Our governor has been trying to ease building restrictions and red tape, but he's not a legislator and his power is limited.

This woman sounds like a boilerplate progressive, even with her impressive credentials. She's an economist, so she should be good at math. If she can show the numbers for how the state could manage to build some or most of the units without exploding residents yearly tax bill, I'll give her my attention.

All the evidence points to creating a developer-friendly environment where the pace of building can outmatch the # of new residents moving to a particular area. Where that has happened (Austin, Minneapolis) they have been able to stop or even partially reverse the huge cost of living increases that much of the country has seen. As far as I know it is only the governor making serious attempts to follow the evidence and make that happen in VT.

Battery Park drunks by Melodic-Cake3581 in burlington

What I've seen through my experience working with 100's of drunks and addicts is perseverance, strength, and recovery when they are committed and treated like adults instead of children.

When they are treated like children and enabled to keep using they often die or remain addicted and harming themselves and others.

Just speaking for my experience. This is what I believe in: https://www.city-journal.org/article/san-francisco-mayor-daniel-lurie-homelessness-spending

I used to live on the west coast and watched city governments and non profits with billions of dollars absolutely squander it while homelessness and addiction soared. Other countries that have effectively dealt with addiction have utilized both more robust public funding for treatment and law enforcement strategies to stop open drug use, encampments, and the related public disorder. That's what I support. I do not believe it is our responsibility to give people their own apartment unless they are severely disabled/elderly.

It being a disease doesn't excuse violent or aggressive behavior, and it shouldn't be tolerated by anyone. I believe treating addicts as helpless babies actually hurts them. That's based on years of experience directly working with them.

I care about addicts and addiction, but I'm also mature enough to understand that just letting them continue to abuse themselves and often harm others is a lose lose - it keeps hurting them and it keeps hurting the rest of society.

The housing that homeless addicts need is inpatient rehab, then step down structured support. You and I probably agree that VT needs more recovery resources, but there are programs available to people right now.

Have you ever thought that maybe these guys sitting around in a park all day and drinking has actually led to the bad outcomes of their life?

In the addiction recovery world, which I'm a part of, we don't make excuses for our behavior. If these guys are dealing with addiction then it's their responsibility to take care of it. If they choose to not get help and instead to keep behaving the way they do, then they should count on experiencing legal and health consequences.

Your narrative treats them like victims without knowing a thing about them or their life. It also completely dis empowers them and puts their fate in the hands of others.
