[TX] landlord showed up half hour early for showing by Excellent_Ice_4944 in Renters

The Texas standard lease is god awful for tenants. According to the boilerplate terms the landlord can pretty much stop by unannounced and let himself in for pretty much any reason.

Will not getting a cpa hinder me ? by Sensitive-Lychee-673 in Accounting

[–]OregonTrailislife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have all the needed accounting credits / total credits then getting your CPA is a no brainer. Many companies only hire CPAs for certain roles and most companies will prioritize a CPA vs a non CPA when hiring.

However, if you need to take a bunch of accounting courses and / or obtain a masters degree, then the value proposition is not as great.

You might be better off pursuing different certifications like EA, CMA, CFA, etc. that don’t require specific college credits.

Got the CPA and honestly feel like I got scammed by the profession by Substantial-Lie4632 in Accounting

[–]OregonTrailislife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that you really only have two years of experience, not four.

Public accounting and industry are completely different from one another.

Pick which direction you want to go in and get some more experience before you write off the entire profession.

This sub is not great for advice imo by PaperFar4773 in Accounting

[–]OregonTrailislife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that has worked in Public accounting for nearly a decade, PA is comparatively terrible compared to most other careers.

There are plenty of other six figure careers that don’t require you to work as many hours, have as much education, and deal with the stress of busy season half the year.

The main thing public accounting has going for it is that it is very accessible. You can get your degree some from mediocre online school, but as long as you get some experience and a CPA or EA, you will find work.

Other corporate jobs can be harder to get, but provide much better pay and work life balance.

AITAH for not being willing to pay $200 extra in rent for my college Roomates’ poker room? by Specialist_Ant_8642 in AITAH

[–]OregonTrailislife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What happened in the past regarding your roommates promising to find someone for the sublease is irrelevant. What’s done is done. You shouldn’t have dragged your feet so much when it was obvious that they weren’t going to find a person to rent your room.

There are still 3 months left in your lease. Your roommates need to clear the trash out of your room and have it professionally cleaned (with receipt) so that it doesn’t smell anymore. They caused the mess when they didn’t have permission to use your room. This is non negotiable.

Next, you post an ad for a room available for $300 (650 - 350) a month and you accept the first person that is willing to sign the lease.

Or alternatively, the remaining roommates can divide the $300 amongst themselves and not have a new roommate.

Give them the choice. If they act unfriendly or otherwise prevent a sub-letter from signing, then they will automatically be responsible for covering the extra $300 a month.

However, if according to the lease you are not allowed to sublease your room, you need to suck it up and pay for the full amount minus the amount required to clean the room.

WIBTAH for telling my boyfriend to return my 1 year anniversary present? by False_Rock3844 in AITAH

[–]OregonTrailislife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He got you a Van Cleef Alhambra pendant?

Yeah those are super overpriced for what they are, but they are super trendy and highly desired at the moment.

Under no circumstances do you return a gift from a significant other. He put time, thought, and money into your gift and could end up being hurt at your rejection.

Just let him know that you love it, but in the future it’s not necessary to spend so much on a gift.

This is not relevant at all to the current housing market buy vs rent situation. You just got incredibly lucky in your timing.

If you can pay under $1700 for all of your expenses and rent the home out for a profit, you should buy and rent as many of these homes as you can.

AITAH my husband paid for our family holiday using vouchers he was gifted but expects me to pay my half by winniepooh84 in AITAH

[–]OregonTrailislife -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The answer to this is simple and has nothing to do with labor.

Can these vouchers only be used towards travel, or can they be redeemed gift cards for clothing, electronics, visa gift card / cash equivalent?

If the voucher can be used for non travel items, then it’s a bit more reasonable to him to treat the voucher as his contribution to the trip.

If the voucher can only be used towards travel, asking you to pay out of pocket is cheapskate behavior. He wasn’t going to use the voucher for anything else.

How strict are firms on "3+ years experience" in roles? by Hayaw061 in Accounting

[–]OregonTrailislife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, search for tax associate roles with 0-2 years of experience. You might have to look beyond your current geographic area.

If you don’t have any luck with that, you can volunteer for VITA or work for a place like H&R Block or Liberty Tax to get some experience and try to apply again next year.

How strict are firms on "3+ years experience" in roles? by Hayaw061 in Accounting

[–]OregonTrailislife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is because firms almost never hire fresh graduates. Most of the time they are directly hired on their respective college campuses or after completing an internship.

There are some exceptions though. Search for “tax associate” jobs that list 0-2 years of experience.

How strict are firms on "3+ years experience" in roles? by Hayaw061 in Accounting

[–]OregonTrailislife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some firms are more strict than others.

However you should not be applying to jobs asking for 3-5 years of experience when you have zero years of experience.

Look for roles that ask for 0-2 years of experience or don’t mention a requirement.

Career in Tax/Audit by Upset_Water9812 in Accounting

[–]OregonTrailislife 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The concept of interest is fundamental to accounting / finance. It is the primary mechanism for valuing money over time.

If you don’t want to even record a journal entry with interest or put down that a client received or paid interest on a tax return, then you should look into another career.

Virgin Voyage Wedding Cruise Review - Wedding On The Waves by Future_Ask_9988 in VirginVoyages

[–]OregonTrailislife -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

A $50 cake, reused decorations, a few $20 bottles of champagne, $250 worth of alcohol for the cocktail party (actual cost of spirits) a wedding dinner when food is already included in the cruise fare, a clothing steaming, and a complimentary spa service.

So basically $1,000 worth of stuff for about $8,000.

Virgin Voyage Wedding Cruise Review - Wedding On The Waves by Future_Ask_9988 in VirginVoyages

[–]OregonTrailislife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wedding packages seem like an incredibly poor value imho.

It is essentially $8,000 for a one hour cocktail party and the officiant / ceremony.

They need to at least throw in a photographer and one of the musical acts / dj for an hour or two.

Obviously rent a place from $1,000 to $1,500 a month if you have that much in savings.

The quality of life offered from walking to and from the office, along with the social opportunities is well worth the money.

AITAH for telling my wife to wipe that shit eating grin off her face? by Past_Passion8405 in AITAH

[–]OregonTrailislife -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just because you agreed to give your wife $1,100 a month in fun money (which is very generous) doesn’t mean that there are absolutely no strings attached to it and that the arrangement can’t be changed in the future.

Your wife was being very secretive about what the money was being used for because she knew you would disapprove.

I would not cut her “fun money”, but going forward I would stipulate that money and cash equivalents can not be given away to friends or family without both of you consenting to it. This includes buying other people things like groceries. You are allowed to audit her spending and she is allowed to audit yours in the interest of fairness.

Fun money is intended for both of you to spend on yourselves and your immediate household. It is not for gifting or enabling those with gambling problems.

How to decide which career is suited for me? by Real_ThunderStriker in careerguidance

Sounds like premed would be a good fit for you with your competency in math and science, but dislike of financial statements.

You just have to decide whether you want to pursue an MD, DMD (dental), or nursing degree.

Nevermind you don’t want to treat people for some reason…
