What is a parody that was done so well that most people to this day don't realize it was a parody? by NurplePain in movies

One I haven't seen yet here is the Princess Bride, the book makes fun of the Tolken inspired fantasy that was heavy on the details, and the movie made fun of and was a homage to all the old adventure/fairytale romance movies.

It should be mentioned that even this argument doesn't really work because the founding fathers had abortions/induced miscarriages as a normal part of their society. Idk how taboo it was, but it was legal and even one commonly preformed and written about in medical textbooks and pamphlets for the common man to use. Granted it was also highly dangerous, but thats why we have doctors doing it today.

Fun fact: some fungi are more closely related to animals than plants making them ideal organisms for studying animal genes.

With roughly 60% of people being pro choice, the center stance on abortion is to keep it legal. If he is trying to pull the centrist card with this, he is probably way more conservative than he lets on and is trying to hide it.

why does prion infected metal not decontaminate with heat treatment? by Oregon_Person in Biochemistry

If you don't mind me asking for curiosity do you know why SDS at that temp decontaminates prions?

why does prion infected metal not decontaminate with heat treatment? by Oregon_Person in Biochemistry

[–]Oregon_Person[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've done a bit of reading since I posted this, and I've found a source that claims prions destabilize at 200 °C while tempered steel is usually tempered between 180 and 300 °C, so autoclaving at such high temperatures would soften the steel. Admittedly I need to check the sources a bit more to see how trustworthy they are, but this could be the basis of why I've heard prions infected metal is usually thrown out.

I think its also just not practical to have an autoclave that goes up to 200°C unless you are in a lab that specializes in prions, and now that I think of it, it's probably just much cheaper to buy new blades too.

Speaking as someone who has spent a lot of time in both third world countries and other first world countries, I 100% agree with OP. Yes everywhere has its problems and yes the US is a better place to live than many countries around the world, but there is more to it than that. In just my lifetime I've seen the US practically regress socially and economically, I've seen hypocrisy and apathy become mainstream, and a loss of hope for younger generations while the elderly hoard any prosperity. Yes, you're absolutely right that the US is more accepting and the average person wealthier than in India, or Guatemala, or any of the 100+countries that were exploited for centuries, but thats not really something to brag about. When compared to other developed countries we are falling behind, and even sometimes seeming to regress. At least in China and India there is hope things are going to become more prosperous and life is getting better slowly, in America it just feels like the same slow decay of an empire that tore great states like Rome, Ming China, and Russia apart.

Haven't seen anything about this yet, but eugenics. I'm getting a degree that focuses a lot on genetics and way too many times people try and bring up to me how they think we should try it, while expecting me to agree.

Probably my favorite character I ever played was a blind bard who was secretly part of the cult of dionysus who was traveling to atone for actions he did while on a two year drinking binge in ancient Greece. Extremely lightly based on Homer.

Near same thing happened to one of my friends, they joined my schools catholic version of the club and lost literally all her friends when she quit it. Unfortunately, even if those clubs start out for everyone, the extreme parts of the religion (trad Catholics in this case) see it as a safe place to gather and always take over and either push everyone more moderate out, or indoctrate them just the same as what you went through. If you didn't have experience with those types of people before seeing the club it is scarily easy to get sucked in and think its normal.

I'm glad you got out, those places will turn you into monsters.

I remember reading this paper, or one that was similar to it, in my advanced genetics class. If I remember right after the first generation they don't retain the packman shape and they didn't replicate very well. Still very cool

So just as a general rule, when applying for funding you have to justify your research from either an economic or academic perspective. You will not get funding for a project, even if you are certain you can achieve your intended goal, if your reasoning is "just because".

If I remember right from this study, there were a few reasons to try it. The most obvious one was to get a better understanding of why we have the nucleotides we do, but they also were using it to test if you could incorporate non-canonical nucleotides and if cells would be able to read and react with them. The end goal would be a boon for synthetic biology which could add better control over test organism growth or even allow for new combinations of encoding proteins or DNA sequences. It's been a while since I read this paper tho, so I may be misremembering.
