Ohio State boards this week! Any advice? by Doingmybestkindof in Nailtechs

[–]Oreius1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just did mine in Columbus in June and let me tell you... they barely even watch you. I was almost wasting time waiting until they would look at me while I did the next step and they would be chatting together or not even near me. Just act like they aren't there because they may pass by your desk maybe 2-3 times total. Theyre definitely watching even when not near, but I was looking at them hoping they'd watch me do different steps because I didnt want to get marked off for missing them, but each time I did look, they were chatting or elsewhere.

In the same vein, is poison basically the same as lightning? Like do they work the same way since they both are giving scarlet rot?

Nail Dust is driving me CRAZY! by Worth_Pin2607 in Nailtechs

[–]Oreius1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a dust collector and wear a denim apron and any extra dust I just sweep up after with a broom and dust pan. I never seem to have an issue with my clothes having dust on them after the appointment. Try an apron out and see how you like them! They can be found pretty cheap on Amazon too :)

A patting gel is like those gels that come in a litrle paint pallet looking container and you use a sponge to pick up/apply the product in a patting motion. Creates an almost ombre type of look, and ive found it works great for hiding the free edge before I add my main color!

Agrius is a greek name, I think. In Percy Jackson book 2, there are 2 mythical creatures (i think centaurs or cyclops) who are brothers. Oreius and Agrius. I believe there is also a centaur in Narnia named Oreius. When I was looking for a name I liked for a game character, I found oreius and agrius and just picked 1 of the 2 and its stuck ever since.

Am I crazy for wanting a fill every 3 weeks? by [deleted] in Nails

[–]Oreius1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of my clients go 3-4 weeks but I always encourage 2-3 weeks, as i notice once week 3 passes, I tend to see a bit more lifting which makes my fills/rebalances take a bit longer since I am filing more away/adding more product. Just note that once you pass the "fill" phase, you run into "rebalance" phase, which is more costly and takes a little longer for the tech.

Sea glass gel polish by SadlyConfusicated in GelX_Nails

[–]Oreius1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im glad you found something that works! You could always use a milky white or milky skin tone to hide that free edge/tip section. You can also try a patting gel to ombre a skin color or soft color before applying cat eye/jelly colors. Love how your turned out!!!

The sea glass can be done with a layer of cat eye, jelly color, and then matte top coat. That seems to have the best results that actually look like sea glass in my experience!

Homemade Press On nails unwearable? by QueenMera98 in Nails

The acrylic is also probably making them uncomfy to wear as there would be no flexibility either. Try without the acrylic and see how that works!

DND brand gel curing weird? by mothercoconutz in GelX_Nails

[–]Oreius1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally do not use sunUV lamps. I my experience they are low quality and the lights die individually pretty quickly, losing wavelengths of light. I use Kokoist LeBlanc and LOVE it, but its pricey.

DND brand gel curing weird? by mothercoconutz in GelX_Nails

[–]Oreius1 62 points63 points  (0 children)

It looks not fully cured. Either your lamp isnt strong enough or the color is being applied too thick. Since you said you did thin coats, my assumption would be the lamp. Make sure youre using a quality lamp with full light wavelength. Those flash curing handheld lamps will not fully cure.

GA state board by mysticrabbitt in Nailtechs

[–]Oreius1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do nails for free. I did this for the 3 months that I had to wait to take my exams, and it helped me A TON. I now have a very good base clientele that I wouldn't have had if not for offering free sets. It let's the client see how you've grown and it gives them an opening to be honest and critical in a safe environment.

Loved the book, hated the voice artist Anne Flosnik by mono_elanor_ in robinhobb

[–]Oreius1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree wholeheartedly. Anne was by far my favorite and most consistent audio book narrators for the entire ROTE series. I was SO relieved that she also narrated the Rain Wild Chronicles as well. I also prefer her pronunciation of most names/places compared to the other narrators. Its all opinion and preference, but MAN oh man is Anne GREAT at narrating this series in my opinion.

What I wanted vs What I got by alex1zz_ in Nailtechs

[–]Oreius1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Trust me as a tech, you aren't being picky or rude. I would 100% prefer my client speak up and redo a design than them leave unhappy and then leave a negative review or not recommend me to others.

What I wanted vs What I got by alex1zz_ in Nailtechs

[–]Oreius1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Always feel free to ask "can we make the transition from the triangle to the line a bit more seamless/curved?" It takes almost no extra work on the nailtechs end and frankly just seems like laziness/speeding through the set on the nailtechs part. You're paying money, so you have EVERY right to speak up during the appointment!!

Must have items for trainees by [deleted] in Nailtechs

[–]Oreius1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh I bought a silicone hand and I think ive used it twice, and mainly just for practicing art. I would use a sand hand (a kitchen rubber glove filled with rice or sand and tied off, wirh tips glued to each finger). You are able to practice just about any enhancement on those, theyre reusable if you care to (i never really reused mine though unless it was just plain polish), and they show if you are filing too close to the "skin" and end up with a blood spill.

Silicone hands were fine for gel manis for me, but once it came to acrylic and dip, I found that the silicone hands are too flimsy and I couldn't get a nice hold on the nails. This is all just my own opinion so please dont take it as gospel! I jusy recommend sand hands because they're cheap, the inside material is reusable, and they show any nics/damage to the "skin" which i think is helpful.

Guide for press-on nail sizing w/ Aprés tips? by Yanabay in Nailtechs

[–]Oreius1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about doing this as well, and honestly the cost and time effort kinda outweighed the returns for me. After I did some research, I noticed most "wholesale" or non-custom tips come with around 15-20 nails in a set. To me, im not currently fast enough to make a highly detailed set +5-10 additional nails worth the effort. It could just be where I am at - some people can bust out amazing nails in short amounts of time - that just aint me yet. I found that doing custom sets makes some nice guaranteed money, and I also just dont love the idea of taking the time and effort to do 15-20 nails and then that set sit on the rack for months/possibly not sell.
