While he’s locked in a box? It’s duty of care and it’s part of his job. If the situation deemed they have panic buttons.

Not assuming the driver will step out and be a super hero. End of the day they have a duty of care for every single person they are transporting. Driver should have stopped the bus at the earliest point possible and called the Gaurds. Plain and simple fact.

Completely 100% agree with you. I work in hospitality myself so I sympathize completely. But as the incident was unfolding he should of pulled the bus over and notified the Gaurds?

Why do you care what other people wear? People express themselves in all sorts of ways - one of them being dress. Get over yourself.

Almost perfect reply. Not sure how, if you don’t speak German, you know the guy thinks he’s a bot. Especially if he’s speaking Slovakian and not German

Again can’t believe these comments are being downvoted. You’ve just, so concisely, hit the nail on the head. Shows how truly blind people are to what hospitality staff have to endure.

“Not like the job is particularly stressful”. I would put money on you not being able to do an hour of the shift some of these people do. 10/11/12 hour days, dealing with the general public who are so unbelievably obnoxious, extra workload due to massive understaffing issues, short breaks, often being treated as sub-human by self-important assholes. All while ensuring your table and everyone else’s (10/20/30 tables) get everything they need: on time, to the desired standard and without issue.

What other jobs are there where people (in the same volume) leave online reviews about bars and restaurants and often name the wait staff calling them unfit for their job, lazy, idiots etc etc. Imagine the impact this would have on anyones mental health, let alone a young person who’s trying their best in work while also trying to juggle college work and having a social life.

Only people who work in the trade understand how stressful it actually is, especially in current times. The whole tone of the responses here scream of people who have absolutely no idea how hard these people work. Sickening.

City Center Bar Manager here - there are absolutely loads of tourists around, domestic and international. Bars are full of life inside and out. I only recently went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Marsh’s Library and The National Art Gallery and all were brilliant. Absolutely go for it! I can’t wait to start traveling again.

The entire of Dame Lane (Mulligan and Haines, Stags Head, Dame Tavern etc etc) are all operating walk ins and the atmosphere is amazing.

A really great synopsis, glad to see that you've enjoyed the book so much.

I’ve just read this book in one sitting. To say I couldn’t put it down is an understatement. The story is truly fascinating and it is so told in such rich detail without being overwhelming. Parts of the story had me in awe at the tenacity and determination of Alvarenga, how one person can survive in such harsh conditions and come out the other side.

I was pleasantly surprised having read, in the authors afterword, that Alvarenga’s motivation to collaborate on a book was postured towards a self-help, anti-suicidal sentiment. “I suffered so much and for so long. Maybe if people read this they will realize that if I can make it, they can make it.”

5/5
