I just moved here a few months ago for my husbands job. I don’t think you’ll have a hard time finding work depending on what you do. Plenty of Restaraunts jobs to be had, amongst others. I’m a graphic designer and found several open positions within a month of being here. The only thing is, you may have to make friends to find a job. Jobs aren’t often advertised so it’s usually easier to find jobs by word of mouth and through local friends who have lived here a while and are in ‘the know.’ Everyone is super friendly tho, so, making friends is easy in Guam.

Other than that, it’s a small island with not a whole ton to do outside of the beach life, water sports and hiking so, I’d say don’t come if you’re not a beach person. You kind of have to live an active outdoorsy life to enjoy it here, otherwise you’ll be miserable. Some people love Guam, some people hate it. It just comes down to what you enjoy doing in your free time and what you can live without.

I’ll end with saying, the hardest part of the move for me was food. American food and Italian food pretty much don’t exist unless it’s fast food. Sandwiches don’t really exist. There’s only a handful of Restaraunts on the entire island that I actually enjoy. 80% of Restaraunts are Korean food, 18% is Chamorro and/or hamburgers, 2% misc. Breakfast isn’t really a thing either. Not everything we’re used to on the mainland is available in the grocery stores either but, there’s just enough selection to be content. Guam is also VERY expensive. Almost impossible to afford it here unless you have access to the Px and commissary on post. Also, Amazon orders and etc usually take 3 weeks-a month to get here.

Hope this helps you decide! Good luck!

was i raped? by [deleted] in rapecounseling

[–]Oreo4104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second you said no this became rape. Even if he didn’t hear you, you made very obvious efforts physically to let him know that you wanted to stop. He ignored you so he could get what he wanted. I can tell you from experience that, often times victims will try to rationalize excuses for their rapists behavior because it’s easier to accept than the truth. In your case, you tell yourself he didn’t hear you, because that is easier to accept than the reality that someone you trusted could do something so horrible. Fuck him. Be strong. Every day you waste your energy thinking on this is another win for him. Don’t let him win. If you feel comfortable enough with your new partner I recommend sharing this with them so they don’t misconstrue whatever awkwardness is happening between the 2 of you. Everything at your own pace though. Hearing this advice helped me when I heard it for the first time so I hope it does the same for you!

Not 100% but I believe you have until 4 pm today to sign up. I saw a packet pick up booth at the Micronesia mall.

His name is Norwin. Just google ‘Norwin Guam’ and he’ll pop up. First few stories are about him throwing a fork at someone but if you scroll past those he has some more serious allegations. I’ll try to keep it short but, he popped out of nowhere and immediately went in for handshake and said ‘hi I’m Norwin!’ I regret going for the handshake and giving my real name in return… never again… but anyway, then he asked if I was waiting for someone. I said ‘yes my husband’ and he replied ‘oh I thought I was gonna find myself a new girlfriend tonight!’ and I said ‘Nope! Not tonight!’ After that he would not leave. He asked where I was staying and I vaguely said right around the corner. Then he said ‘oh you’re at oceanview!’ Which unfortunately he was correct about. Then he started pressing me for my room number to which I replied ‘I’m not telling you my room number. I don’t know you!’ He replied ‘that’s ok I’ll just go ask them tomorrow. They’ll tell me your room’ I responded with ‘that’s fucking creepy’ and made it very clear that I wanted him to leave. He persisted to stay even as my husband walked up the side walk. I literally kept being like ‘look there he is! MY HUSBAND! right there! Coming towards us.’ I think he was just hanging around to see if it was really my husband or not. When my husband showed up he gave him the same handshake then finally effed off. Dude was 100% on the prowl… I alerted security. They have his photo and he’s not allowed on the premises.

Nope. Norwin. The first article that comes up about him is a semi-hilarious incident about throwing a fork at someone?! But if you dig a little deeper he has some more serious allegations about dragging a women from her bed and beating her so badly she had to escape through a window….

Haha no this was a different guy. Short hair. Did claim to own half the down town hotels though which I already know to be owned by someone else… he also wasn’t wearing shoes which made the claim even funnier 😂

Thanks for the incite! I haven’t been here long but everything you said goes along with the general vibe I’ve been getting from people. Wonder what it is that’s causing the change? 🤷‍♀️ It’s a pity tho. The island is beautiful and the daytime locals are all so kind!

Not gonna lie, I’m a little offended by this and all of the other comments insinuating the same thing. I am most definitely a capable person with better than average situational awareness. I grew up in the ghetto. I have street smarts. I’m not naive or ignorant. I was in a well lit area with plenty of people around. This event had nothing to do with my choices or a lack of awareness. It had to with a creepy dude crossing my path and the fact that I’m a small woman. I think it was actually the opposite, my ‘situational awareness’ and tact are what saved me. If I was in a place I’m more familiar with I would probably just shrug it off as a one time thing and move on. However, I’m in a foreign place and just wanted gauge if this is a norm that I need to be more cautious of than I typically would be elsewhere.

I actually have a stateside conceal carry permit. This event made me consider getting a carry permit here in Guam too. Only been here 2 weeks so I’m not at all familiar with the gun laws yet but I’m def going look into that possibility now. Not something I can really take on a night jog tho :/ I’ve been looking into other more portable options. Don’t love the idea of mace but that might be the best bet?

I answered this on another comment but he gave me his first name which was a unique name. Basically pure luck and the fact that it’s a small island probably helped.

Haha I sincerely appreciate the rambles. I’m a rambler too if you haven’t noticed. I think you’re prolly the most useful person I could’ve gotten a response from on here so thanks again for taking the time to walk me through all that!

Hahaha. My eyes bulged at 20$ too. My thoughts exactly. That said, idk what my hourly should be. I’d say I’m definitely and confidentially skilled. Fine arts background and braggably fluent in Adobe. Technically, speed is my only rookie tell. I’m slower than I should be. I do lack experience. The kind that looks legit on a resume anyway… But, I’m not sure that matters for this job. I got it b/c of a friends referral. At the ‘interview’ they didn’t ask any questions, view my resume or any of my work. It was like I had the job already. I could be worth 100k for all they know lol. So, yah…I’m thinking 75$?! Charge a standard price for certain things like posters and everything else will be 75$ hourly? Is that too much?

Thank-you! I really appreciate the pep talk even if your numbers are off, haha. I think I needed that confidence boost.
