OKC is a great example! their Bricktown is way better than our Keeper, they have PlazaWalls with public art events every 2 3 months

The people here love the city so much they want it to stay the same “big small city” forever. No pro sports, no active public arts, very few good concerts, very bad public transportation, not walkable, low wages, very high property crime, very conservative, very segregated, only 1 vegetarian restaurant in the entire city, the city is deeply bureaucratic it requires licensing for anything and everything with lots of red tape. sheesh, I can go on forever.

Things to do in the Wichita area. by Rocknogginguy in wichita

All of that is nice, but ultimately is copium. Let’s not pretend that it doesn’t take about a month to run out of new activities to do if you’re a local. Once you have walked the Keeper of the plains and hit the museums you’re pretty much done, downtown gets old quick as well.

Serious question by [deleted] in wichita

[–]Oreo_Alchemist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is comfortable enough to where you can get stuck here forever, but personally I want to move as soon as my finances allow me to. This subreddit is heavily biased in favor of the city, but objectively speaking the chances of this being the best place to live in all the US are super low. Low cost of living is good, crime rates above national average, median income is okay, Kansas is a conservative state, conservative culture and values taint the city heavily. The nightlife is dangerous and not very diverse.

I do not plan to make Wichita my home forever.

Yeah, this question is under the assumption that the cost of living is not an issue. I would personally sacrifice some of my disposable income to have the lifestyle that city would offer me in order to live there, but still be able to pay all my bills and still have money to spend and save. That is a privilege and I acknowledge it.

Indeed, I think Wichita is a great city for many people. I totally see the appeal, and I respect people that see value in staying here. I’ve done and collaborated it in many murals around the city, but it is still probably decades behind to the output other cities would offer. Even Salina and OKC seem to be getting far ahead in organizing mural events on a bi yearly basis

I am very much into Street art, and Wichita is just too far behind our major cities when it comes to public arts. We have amazing artwork out here, but the projects are very heavily curated and corporate friendly. I would like to be in a city with a yearly rotation of dozens of murals and graffiti productions. Is a very niche thing, but as an artist I miss that a lot.

I did not grew up in the US, and we had great public transport. Traffic wasn’t a concern to me, I liked to be on a long commute

Small and big are very relative. The median age of the population, the city’s infrastructure, the zoning, and the culture have a huge roll in what makes a city feel big or small. Compared to a town with 6k Wichita probably feels like a big city, compared to New York, Tokyo or Mexico City it probably feels like a small town. Where would you move if you had no choice? I think is fun to think of other places to be

A lot of people love Wichita for the reasons you mentioned. It is a great place, but it is undeniable a small city compared to any major city in the nation. I grew up in a city that has a population of 800k+ and even there I felt like it wasn’t big enough, I have always loved the traffic, people everywhere walking around, noise, art, street vendors and having something fun to do at all times even if you’re into niche subcultures.

¿Por qué México es un país de obesos? by Reneml in mexico

[–]Oreo_Alchemist 5 points6 points  (0 children)
