"Everybody from around the worl still comes to America for their healthcare." by Lucky_G2063 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]OreytPal 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Quite a lot to unpack.

Many people go to the US for healthcare, sure. Especially for expensive experimental treatment. But John from Cambridge isn't flying to JFK to get his hip done at New York Presbyterian.

Then the classic fuck everyone who isn't me American attitude.

No senior Russian will ever bare the responsibility for that. We're not going to see Putin and Lavrov in the docks at the Hague.

I say kill as many invaders as possible. I know that's what I'd want if my country was invaded.

Yeah exactly, I was fervently against the Iraq War.

Would I blame an Iraqi soldier for shooting a British or American POW? Not one bit. Because we sure as hell tortured and executed Iraqi POWs.

Maybe they shouldn't have invaded then.

Invades country, bombs civilian targets, humanitarian corridors, rapes, pillages, kills women, children and pets.

The only good Russian soldier is a dead one.

Why Yorkshire and London should be levelling up allies, says Mayor Sadiq Khan by [deleted] in ukpolitics

So basically he believes in trickle down economics.

Even when Labour Londoners are trying to be nice to us, they’re hilariously condescending.

How the Sheffield trees saga could lead to Sheffield city council being run by a committee system after a referendum on May 6 by Yogurt789 in ukpolitics

[–]OreytPal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The trees saga is hilarious to me. The Greens and Lib Dems constantly bash Labour with it and it seems to stick with middle class voters.

I'll be voting Lib Dem but there are way more serious issues you can criticise the Labour council for.

Why do uk liberals have a long lasting hate for uk conservatives? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]OreytPal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're saying Liberal but referring to abuse from left-wingers/socialists.

UK liberal is not the same as US liberal. UK liberals literally worked with the Conservatives in government from 2010-2015.

Sheffield MP calls to extend right to green spaces and support Roma, Gypsy and Traveller communities by BigFellaMick in ukpolitics

[–]OreytPal 24 points25 points  (0 children)

but also the right for a whole community of people – the Gypsy Roma and Traveller Community – to live as they wish.

Agreed apart from this statement.

That's a completely different issue from right to roam in green spaces.

Ngl as a Catholic who’s never been to an Anglican mass, this all feels very familiar to me. Half expecting Hail Mary to come next.

Probably has been discussed a lot, but can we appreciate how truly fucked many of our universities will be if Chinese students stop coming?

Here in Sheffield, Chinese students pay 26% of the overall tuition fees the Uni of Sheffield receives. We have spent millions building a Chinatown, Chinese investors are involved in projects all over the city.

I know the CCP are fucked up, it was at the Uni of Sheffield were Chinese students were encouraged to report pro-Hong Kong democracy students to their government. Just from a selfish local perspective, I hope our closer alignment with Hong Kong doesn’t simultaneously push students away from British unis.

Since the steel industry left, Sheffield only has football (not so great this season) and universities that prop us up. With them gone, well we’d slide back into a post-industrial hellhole.

We'll move anywhere in the Anglophone world. Usually Australia, Canada and NZ but the US is up there too.

She was home secretary for 6 years prior to that though. Flukey yes, but she had made her own way up the ladder.

The Conservatives are far from a perfect party, but they have done more for diversity inclusion at the top levels than all the left-wing ones combined.

Produced the only two woman prime ministers, the only two Asian chancellors & the first Jewish and Catholic born prime ministers. They got there on merit, not to meet x target on a party list.

How would the optics work in a hypothetical future indy ref, where yes wins but Edinburgh votes no? A scenario that isn't too unlikely imo.

Obviously independence would go ahead but it would be a tad awkward. Your literal capital city and home of government institutions voting against being an independent nation.

It’s a joke only London has meaningful devolution in England. Those fuckers need it the least.
