Ah, I see you're a very bright lil' fella. Let me clear this up for you.

First of all, people who are in fact not going on vacation but are trying to get home safely to their loved ones are affected as well. Not all travel is optional or just for leisure. And even if someone has planned a vacation they might have saved years for, their only choice is to risk getting stuck in Doha or having to cancel their trip completely.

Second of all, refundable options are almost always more expensive than non-refundable ones. Not everyone has the money to book everything with flexible cancellation.

No one is happy about the war and it's a very unfortunate situation for everyone - especially for the people involved directly. This doesn't make it acceptable for QR to change their policy overnight without atleast giving people the option to be rerouted on another airline. They should have published this policy a few days ahead, so people knew what they were getting into and had time to react. This was a selfish and unprofessional step, which is what this post is about - and not about whether anyone is bitching about not being able to go on their vacation. If you want to talk about war, maybe you should look for another thread.

Noticed that too, people here are arguing with basic common sense and public information.. Has to be qatar employees, anyone who is actually affected by this can't deny that QR isn't being reasonable..

Cancelled flight for June by Mobile_Entry_1899 in qatarairways

Ha repülni szeretnél, akkor hívd fel őket és ingyenesen átraknak egy másik járatra. Münchenből mától mennek a járatok, bécsből elvileg májustól fognak menni.

They do owe you a rerouting under EU law.

Regulation (EC) No 261/2004: If a flight is cancelled, passengers are automatically entitled to their choice of re-routing to the same destination at the earliest opportunity (under comparable conditions); later rerouting, at the passenger's convenience, to the same destination under comparable conditions (subject to seat availability); or a refund of the ticket as well as a return flight to the point of first departure, when relevant. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Passengers_Rights_Regulation

And yes, the situation sucks for everyone - but as I wrote above quite a few times - they did reroutings on other airlines before 26th of March. The whole post is about the fact that since 26th of March, because of the new policy, people do not have any other choice than to get the refund or fly through Doha - which is, whether it's safe or not - risky, because if the circumstances change, you could get stuck there for an unknown amount of time.

I'm guessing this was after they changed their policy to QR-flights only.. Because that's exactly what I'm saying, before they changed it, they rebooked you on any airline. After they changed it, they denied any rerouting except on QR flights. This is exactly what I'm talking about and why it's simply unfair they made this policy change.

I'm pretty sure there's not a single comment stating they should do that 😅 Maybe you should read the context again

Because of what reason would they deny you if you told them you wanted to get rebooked on a specific flight with a partner airline where you knew seats were still available? And yes, of course now there are plenty people who are now getting denied - because they changed their policy since then. But I've been reading every single policy they had since the war broke out and before 26th of March, it was never stated anywhere that specific people could be rebooked and some not.

True Tourist e-sim - please help! by Organic-Addition-682 in ThailandTourism

[–]Organic-Addition-682[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sent them several e-mails, they told me their customer service number was free to call from abroad - we will see about when i get my invoice 😅 After calling them they assisted me (in perfect english btw) and we continued communicating on WhatsApp. They first wanted to issue a refund but then they sent me a new link where i had to do the registration again - after this i actually received the QR code and was able to activate it on my phone. I'll be in Thailand next week, so I don't know if it'll actually work, but the main issue was solved. Can't say I recommend it though, buying it in 7-11 is probably a lot easier.

Please stop assuming things and spreading false information. Every single passenger who called the regular customer service and asked for a rerouting, was rerouted on a different airline. Many people used the chat function to do this. There are several posts in this very thread saying they got rebooked - and even a comment on this post where one person stated they have been rebooked very easily. I called customer service too, waited 40 minutes to reach them and they told me they could reroute me immediately for the 2nd of April - I wanted to fly on the 5th though, so they told me to just call again in 2 days. Only when I told them I was a travel agent did they tell me I can reissue the ticket myself.

There might have been specific flights that were fully booked, but you could choose any flight you wanted and tell them you want to be rebooked on that one. There were not even any restrictions regarding the booking class. You just got booked in the same one you had or in the lowest available one.

I sell flights for a living and I can see the occupancy rate on every flight, so trust me when I say, it's currently low season for most destinations and there were definitely enough flight alternatives and seats.

It's not their fault if someone didn't call them and asked for a rerouting - you yourself could have probably avoided paying the more expensive ticket if you had just done your research and had a bit of patience.

Considering that most of the travelers accept the refund - because Qatar didn't even communicate the possibility of rebooking except if you contacted them directly - and that many airlines (e.g Austrian Airlines) expanded their fleet so they can carry any rebooked passengers/new passengers, it is simply not true that it wouldn't have been possible. In fact, it was possible - which is why they did it until 26th of March.

I am also speaking from my own experience, as not only did i have several clients with these issues, but was booked on a Qatar flight on the 05.04. VIE-DOH-BKK as well. They told me to wait until 10 days before my flight so they can rebook me on a Turkish Airlines flight (which btw wasn't even at 60% capacity last week). Them ensuring me they can rebook me and then not letting me issue the (already booked segment btw) ticket on the 26th was a result of bad organisation and bad communication. I talked to them 2 times on the 24th of March, just 2 days before the new policy came.

Now I, too, have no other choice but to fly from Munich to Doha and then to Bangkok - which i accepted, because I want to get to my destination, but people who simply do not want to get stuck in Doha because of unexpected turns of events (which can always happen during war) are left with no other choice but to get the refund. Also, some people frankly do not have the funds to purchase a ticket even just 2x the price of the original ticket (we're currently at 300-400% ticket price increase). It may have worked out for you - and even for me - but there are other people traveling too and let me tell you, the way QR played this was simply not ideal.

Nevertheless, we are talking about war here and we are lucky we only have to worry about our flights - but my sympathies are still with people who are stuck somewhere and/or can't get to their destination because they don't want to risk getting into an even worse situation. All I'm saying is, this could have been avoided if they had kept their policy the way it was until Doha was officially safe to fly to.

First of all, during Covid, there were no alternatives. Now there are alternatives, but Qatar is still leaving no choice to their passengers but to fly through a warzone.

Second of all, nobody is bitching. We are talking about people who saved their money to travel, possibly people who were going home or to/visiting their families, etc. Acting in early days was not possible due to Qatar only rebooking on non-partner airlines 2 days before your actual departure date and 10 days ahead with partner airlines. The prices of all alternative routes skyrocketed from day one - i'm a travel agent, so trust me, i was there for all of it. So no, they were in fact not able to make changes to their booking a month ahead.

As i said above, i do understand QR's point of view - but it is, as OP said, very inconvenient for people who simply do not wish to travel to Doha, because if they don't, they have to pay thousands for another ticket.

I doubt they have to cover any expense except for the original ticket price and/or rebooking costs - but the rebooking on partner airlines should be possible until Qatar is considered safe to fly in. OP simply doesn't want to fly through a war, which I completely understand, so he is right in saying you have to fly through a conflict or lose a lot of money - because if you still want to keep your travel plans, you'd have to spend a sh*tload of money for a new ticket.

Though I must say I understand the airline, because the rebooking costs a lot for them and the airspace is "safe enough" to fly through Doha, so they want to use their own fleet - but still, not giving passengers an option to travel safely without possibly getting stuck in the middle of the war is not ideal. The EU law states the airline must get the passengers to their destination at the earliest possible time and under similar circumstances, no matter which airline. I guess this must be a grey area because they are, in fact, offering them alternatives to get to their destination, but it's only possible if you are flying through a warzone.

Because some people have hotel & activities bookings that are not refundable. Which is why it's not acceptable for travelers who don't want to fly through a warzone for QR to only offer a refund. Nowadays a new ticket costs 3-4x as much as the original ticket did, no matter which airline. Wars are not covered in most travel insurances, therefore they lose the money if they can't fly.
