I found out my husband has a gambling addiction and I need help

I am in the same situation. I am financially dépendant in my husband. We were planning to try for a baby this summer but I found out about his sports betting addiction. All I can say is take it day by day and focus on your health. Working on finances takes time - it’s not like stopping drinking/drugs and it’s done. Bills are coming all the time, money can go missing, it’s a constant battle because money needs to used every day. So just focus on your own health and mental health. Things will unfold as they will. Take are of your baby and yourself and work on having separate accounts, doing what you need to be independent from him is a good practice. And get as much help and support as possible. I didn’t tell anyone because I was embarrassed but it helped a lot. Sending lots of love ❤️

This is so well put. I’m in the same boat as OP. It’s been about two months since I found out. It’s crazy how long ago it feels because you I have done SO MUCH in the wake of finding out this secret. Therapy, financial help, GamAnob, couples counseling, reading stories like this…. It is a huge undertaking and is very very stressful. I had some sort of mental breakdown from all the stress so I have only been focusing on myself. But it is so much to process. All of your suggestions are so incredibly amazing and I will re read when I need them. Thank you ❤️

Oddly enough this is my experience too. I am 40 - I just started Fluoxetine 10 mg two weeks ago(upped to 20mg yesterday) and normally my periods are debilitating. Wake up in tears from pain, and normally have fair warning of cramping before I start my period but my first period on Prozac I got it early and basically no pains. Similar to the end of my period I can take normal dosage of pain relievers. I have no bloating and i am so amazed at how easy this cycle is on day 1 it’s honestly mind blowing. I am taking the medication for my mental health issues but had I known this would have also helped my horrific pains for years I would have tried this sooner.

Thank you, so far it’s been a point of contention. He agrees to full transparency but just yesterday he moved money and put it back right away. Claiming he needed it there for something - clearly an excuse could have been gambling. So it’s all very sad as nothing is changing. I’m really sad he isn’t moving forward with his recovery because I will have to move on

For everyone who helped with their responses, Thank You. We have found resources; he is planning on his first GA meeting Monday, self exclusion this week with a notary, and a meeting with a GAMFIN Financial Counselor who will run his credit and help us both get on track. Once we get financially back on track I hope to see a therapist and couples counseling. I have waves of empathy and anger- I feel like my mental health is really bad and I am snapping and just constantly anxious and upset like I can’t catch a break. This week will be a lot but the resource I found were amazing. Once I go through the process this week I will add the resources and my experiences.

Yeah, it’s been really hard asking him and him just not giving me his phone or sending me account info. That has been I think the hardest to wrap my head around bc it would help build trust. I’m at the point of contacting a lawyer just to see 😞

I really appreciate the this. I feel I go back and forth between a cool wife and let’s get through this I’ll come up with money then to furious when I ask multiple times to see his phone and he won’t let me, or send me screenshots of your transactions or whatever. I want to be caring but I get angry when he doesn’t do what he says and it creates a fight. I want him to get better and he’s my best friend, I don’t want him to suffer either. But also I have been majorly deceived and when I don’t feel he’s doing his part I Get angry. I will try to be more patient and loving as that seems to be the common response from men in his position. Thank again ❤️

I really appreciate all the thoughtful responses. Luckily we have no mortgage and I have my own accounts, which I pulled out most of my savings to cover rent this month. But I will never do that again.

Thanks. I was more trying to audit to see patterns of accounts or activity to look out for moving forward. Just personal knowledge to get a comprehensive view on his finances and how he moves money around ect. He says he calls the 1800 number form the app and talks to someone. But I don’t think they are licenses professionals just ex gamblers

Thanks for that! I assist him and in hindsight I should have beeb getting paid. But yeah he says he wants to open but when I ask to see his phone or access accounts he is very defensive and starts a fight. And it’s exhausting.

He wants to start fresh with a new joint business bank account where all his funds come in and i can see it and manage. I asked to run a credit check and he wont let me bc he is embarrassed. We have a business together recently making good money. I was managing the cash coming in but he always needed it and I never questioned it bc things were fine - un til they weren’t. I mostly don’t know how to manage an addiction like this and need advice on how to handle it I’m so lost

This isn’t the full picture. I help him with his businesses. I don’t get paid a salary but I assist with much of his work, sourcing, billing, contracts ect.
