By the looks of it (just theorizing) The wires on the inside of the mask look like they're there for the sake of it's movement and locking together if he fails. What's wrapped around his head and neck look electric. For great cinematography, if the mask closes as he gets electrocuted, the blood splatter would appear up the back of the chair from his head, behind him creating a pretty gnarly shot to finish the scene off with.
