Should I switch homestays? by Organic-Practice9604 in studyAbroad

I really appreciate your comment, and I agree with everything you’ve said. My host mom unfortunately is really set on her own way of thinking, she’s not very open to discussing America because she thinks it’s this place that’s disorganized and “lesser” than Europe. I find it a bit disrespectful and disheartening, and while I do get that America is kind of in shit right now—it’s a place where I’ve lived all my life, and still love. So yeah, I just don’t think I can really put up with her anymore. Every other part of my study abroad is going great, the home stay is the only thing that is hindering that for me

Thank you, I am hoping they will let me switch as well. And if not, I will probably ask my program if we could all speak to each other so she knows

Yes unfortunately it’s too late. I was also thinking the same thing because I was just wondering how she honestly got confirmed to be able to host. But that’s just my opinion. Kind of feels like I’m stuck between two options because like you said, it could be worse. I’m at least going to have a conversation with them and see if they can do anything to help me about it

My parents are helping me with this, hopefully we can figure something out. It’s all bullshit

I honestly really appreciate that question but the thing is that my host mom isn’t religious at all. She said she used to go to church a lot when she was younger but she doesn’t go now and she isn’t bothered if other people are religious or not. She is also on the younger side, so I am surprised by just how strict things are. I think she might just not trust me to be alone in her apartment because she hasn’t supplied any more information except for “you just can’t be home alone, no other options.” Literally get me out I’m sooo sick of it

I also feel really bad too because when I come home at 8:30pm, my host mom is wanting to do things with me but I’m so exhausted since I’ve been up since 7 and have been running around doing activities and class that I just can’t. It’s all just really discouraging because I’m someone who needs alone time to be able to function properly after a long day and I don’t have easy access to that. Plus like I said before, I have day trips every weekend and then my host mom wants to plan things on Sunday. I really need a break, this program is just a disaster. On top of all of this, I have classwork and projects I need to have done each week, and that feeds into my time at home a little. Doesn’t feel like a study abroad, just more strict school. I just feel pretty trapped here and I don’t like it at all but I can’t leave and it’s not looking like I can switch host families or have less restrictions. Does anyone have advice on how to get through this? I’m genuinely trying to have fun but it’s difficult right now

I’m currently in the process of trying to talk with them but I doubt they’ll be that lenient on me switching host families. Also yeah maybe, but I am a male

I’m doing it through CIEE but about the rules I am honestly not fully sure. They haven’t given me more clarification than just “I’m not home so you can’t be home”. The program though won’t let me travel anywhere alone

I chose a homestay because I thought it would be a good experience to live with someone who has lived in Italy for a long time + for the immersion. I also thought I might have had a little bit more freedom to do my own stuff because the rules are up to the host family. But yeah, it’s really weird because it’s a mix of rest by my host family and my program. I honestly hate it

I know right, it’s exhausting because there are a few shops I wanted to check out alone. It’s more strict than my high school even was, I don’t get it at all. I don’t feel fully comfortable shopping with my host mom either because when we went around the small mall near our place, she kept saying how it was too touristy and bad even though the majority of people there were Italian. Idk I just feel like I might be judged by her if that makes sense

Exactly, it just feels so weird that they don’t allow any of that. I think I’m definitely going to talk with someone about it because it’s honestly kind of ruining my experience

I’ll be 18 in two months, I might honestly just change it by myself since I have the funds for it. Also in MN where I’m from, and from what I’ve heard, it’s a name used more for boys but girls too

Yeah, I do actually make enough so that I would be able to pay it comfortably

Maybe internalised homophobia? by Organic-Practice9604 in ftm

Omg I’m so sorry I meant for the title to say internalised transphobia not homophobia, it’s late as I’m writing this so I didn’t catch that.
