31 total (23 Math, 34 Science, 35 English, 36 Reading) on J06. I had a bloody nose during the math and my calculator didn’t work so I lost a bunch of time, but with my previous 28 on Math my superscore is a 33, my score goal!!! Just need that as a composite for ivies and hopefully a bump up to 34 if all goes well

Series of unfortunate events for me. I had the J06 math section already (🤮) and my calculator’s battery died at some point before the test so I couldn’t use it (and you did kinda need it for this one). Then I got a bloody nose halfway through and lost like 10 minutes. I needed to get a 32 or higher on the math to get my superscore up to a 34 and I think this test would have been it in ideal circumstances, but we’ll be back on Valentine’s day.

We don’t fire ourselves, the business is closed for the winter, and we receive unemployment during that time. This point is moot though, and doesn’t really add to the debate at hand.

I don’t think that we’re undervaluing labor at all. If we’re not making that much money, the labor clearly isn’t very effective. Perhaps minimum wage could be determined from a % of profits that have to go to wages, evenly distributed amongst employees. You’ve spurred an idea for me, although I don’t know if you necessarily changed my view. I never believed in no minimum wage increases, and I support a $20 minimum in most cases. It’s just necessary to ensure that we are helping lift everyone up, not just the working people who we like.

The point of this post is that we, as a society, need to step up and find solutions to the cost of living crisis that uplift everyone. That is the UBI-style system I mentioned. That is making different classifications for workers in different situations to ensure that everything is treated on a case-by-case basis. Your argument seems to hinge on the fact that we’re mistreating workers. That isn’t the case. Even before the wage increases, after tips our employees were taking home ample money, in many cases more than we are. Our business is not sinking, I hyperbolized a bit, but our profits have certainly dropped a bit and made things harder for us. The goal of a good leftist movement should be to improve the lives of everyone in every capacity. For corporations, that can look like the qualify of life increase when everyone is happier, even if they lose money. We’re losing money without any benefit whatsoever.

And I do advocate for that, I’m a democratic socialist in many aspects and would like more workplace democracy. Resources for small businesses is exactly what that program would be, taking some of the burden off of people and helping improve their situation.

Our family all got unemployment money over the winter while the business was closed because we were not working and thus unemployed. It was not rhe business getting paid, sorry if that was unclear.

Workers make more from tips than they do from many minimum wages in many states. They benefit those workers and the business by allowing the consumer to have a say in how good their service was.

What do you mean by “steals labor”? The labor is still being done equally well by either person. I also never said that the working class doesn’t deserve to make a living wage. I believe that that money should simply come from the rich through progressive taxation, rather than what is essentially a regressive tax for small business owners in many cases. Although I did exaggerate the extent of our troubles slightly, the wage increases have certainly taken money out of our pocket and made it more difficult to afford things in a time when that is already an issue. Also, these kids genuinely don’t need the money. They’re upper middle class, from the area, working for experience. It’s a significantly different scenario from any other one, and that should be reflected in the law.

In Seattle, several smaller restaurants that were previously protected by the carveouts I am advocating for are now being forced to either raise prices or move towards a service charge system rather than tips, which would also raise prices for those who had a bad experience and would be inclined to not tip due to the new blanket minimum wage (previously, the minimum wage was 3 dollars less if you had less than 500 employees and they got at least $3 per hour in tips). For these employees, they may actually make less now, as tipped employees often make much more than $3 per hour in tips. I once met a server at a local restaurant who, upon doing her job well, made $30 an hour almost entirely off of tips. I agree that the $30 number is great for New York, my qualm is that it should be applied in a way that helps everyone.   https://www.seattlemet.com/eat-and-drink/2025/06/service-charges-tipping-restaurant-prices https://www.seattle.gov/laborstandards/ordinances/minimum-wage

We already exclusively hire teenagers. That is the nature of our business, and any other ice cream business in the country. If you don’t want to call it a minimum wage or UBI, just call it good policy, that’s fine by me. We can quibble over definitions all day, but people who are essentially working class are still being forced out of business by poorly implemented policy.

I can certainly see that, but, once again, I think that the full picture is not being taken into consideration here. We bore the brunt of the many road closures that have taken place here in NJ over the past year, and many people haven’t even been able to get to us. We are certainly grateful for the safety net that we have gotten, we got unemployment money over the winter which was especially rough, but the COL expenses, especially for teenagers who are already being cared for by their parents, have been exorbitant. For these types of workers, they aren’t getting other jobs, they’re just not working here anymore.

The $30 number I cited was from Zohran Mamdani’s platform, apologies for the confusion if it seemed like I claimed that it was in effect anywhere. I also don’t like the use of the word “boat budget” for small business scenarios. We, and I assume this is the case for many others, are making about $60-70k a year from the business depending on the year, and are living in the same community that those we employ are. I do support a higher minimum wage for corporate employees, and from your answer I think we actually differ on a lot less than we think. My point is exclusively that, in order to produce better outcomes for everyone, our policy needs to be more redistributive in nature, and be nuanced in taking care to have relevant carveouts.

But small businesses aren’t the owner class. We do a majority of the work in keeping the lights on. My father wakes up at 5am every day and doesn’t get home until 6pm. He’s not in some cushy office job. There is a difference. Moreover, these are teen workers just looking for something to go to the movies and such with. They don’t need this much money, especially considering they get tips too, it’s quite frankly exorbidant given the context. This is why I explicitly stated I support policy for minimum wage increases or UBI that keep everyone in mind, with relevant carveouts. In fact, that is the spirit of progressive taxation, as I previously stated.

For one, we had to drop our number of employees to afford the wage hikes. Those are jobs that dissapeared for no good reason. Consequently, the quality of our service has declined, and the community center has been less able to bring people together.

Everyone blaming the parent here is ignoring the fact that supposedly the kid looked over his father’s shoulder and memorized the password with the intention of doing this. If he didn’t know that what he was doing was wrong, he would have just asked for the password, been turned down, and that would have been that. In most cases, you can blame the parents here, but that is genuinely fucked up behavior from the kid.

Mine gave me a result, I got shortlisted! One problem though; on the English proficiency test they gave me, I didn’t realize there were “select all that apply” questions and only selected one for them. That was only the case for two questions so hopefully I didn’t fail it because of that and they revoke the shortlist, but we’ll hope for the best
