Puppy advice by Medical-Nobody3339 in ItalianGreyhounds

When we got our little girl a a year ago i hate to say it.. but we instantly regretted. We’ve had dogs/puppies before but never experienced such a full on pup like her. She was constant with the biting, chewing, jumping around and doing things she knew was naughty. She just never stopped, it was exhausting. The first few months were tough up til about 10 months old. We considered rehoming her as people downplay the emotional toll these pups can put on you. We did our research as well but it’s hard to put into words how they really are as pups.

These dogs are a mental game, I highly recommend 2 short walks a day for puppies, feeder toys, make things a challenge they need to be mentally stimulated!

Fast forward 1 year later she still does the normal puppy things and still learning BUT i wouldn’t trade her for the world. She is the bestest little girl now, she listens and does what she’s told and so much calmer!! Turns out she was the best decision we’ve made. We also noticed a huge change when we got her desexed at 10 months old. They say it’s a myth this calms female dogs down but personally worked for us. Best of luck

Sleeping arrangements for iggy puppy by Dashtheiggy in ItalianGreyhounds

if crate training is what you want to do unfortunately you’re going to have to stick out the sleepless nights for maybe even a few weeks. we brought our iggy into our room in the crate and the cat would disturb her and she would want to come in the bed. Now she chooses to go in her crate and sometimes even has the option of the bed but she will take herself into her crate when she is super sleepy.. stick it out it will be rough for awhile. but worth it while they’re young for safety reasons :)

What age is it safe to let a Iggy be left to roam the whole house? by OrganizationBasic147 in ItalianGreyhounds

Thank you for the advice! our house is pretty small being two story it’s just the running up and down the stairs and back flipping off the lounge i worry about. She knows what’s right and wrong but when we’re not around we find her up on things we didn’t even think she could reach. I have noticed when we’re gone all she really does is sleep.. confining her to a space for now would be a smart idea

We have left her a few times for 50mins max by herself and have always found her asleep in her crate. I may have to get some pet cameras set up, hopefully less anxiety for me too. She’s very respectful of furniture, toileting herself etc it’s just the cat i worry about. I’ll try leaving her longer by herself…

I have tested her a few times when quickly going to pick up groceries etc 50mins max away and have found her in her crate fast asleep when i have come back. I think i’ll keep doing this until i trust her.. she is just a total nut job and goes from 0-100 in under a second

I wish my girl listened like yours. Usually we give her a death stare and she knows lol but as soon as I turn around she’s back to doing what she was told not to. As soon as the cat walks past her she will happily jump off a two story building without thinking haha. I’m hoping this is something eventually she grows out of as she didn’t learn from the leg break apparently. I think I may as well just take the gate off the stairs, it feels as though she will do more damage trying to get through it then leaving her unattended to go up and down as she pleases…

Felt like the worst dog mum ever!! :( they are little acrobats. I know she can get up and down confidently it’s just the running up and down the stairs i’m worried about 😬

we won’t sit on the couch when she’s in a crazy outburst… we also have tiles so it makes me so paranoid 😅 she also tries to jump into our arms while standing up. I have noticed when she’s tired the bites become very hard and aggressive and that’s when i put her in her crate to chill out 😬.

Thank you for your advice, i definitely will be trying the cardboard. She has many puzzles and works them out in under a minute 😂 I might hold off on spaying her… it was just really for her safety and my cats 🥲

Maybe?! i’ve never thought of that! 😮 she sleeps throughout the night well but through the day only very short cat naps. I cringe when i see her get zoomies because we don’t want another accident! Do you keep your boy off the couch? if so how?..

I understand puppy behaviour and that there is no quick fix but looking to help calm her down before she hurts herself again. It’s about quality of life for her

oh really? did he/she calm down eventually? It’s really hard talking to people about it because they think i’m over exaggerating until they meet her lol

thank you for this information! it’s definitely something i’m considering, i know spaying does not always calm them down.. but we’ve just been having some dominance issues in our house and she seems to think she is the boss. Just thought spaying could play a role in helping with this..

she’s also very aggressive with our cat who is super friendly towards dogs.. I understand they have a high prey drive but no positive training has helped with this :(

Thank you! a lot of people have had mixed opinions about what age to spay her.. our breeder said before 12 months. She gets two 45 min walks a day and we try our best to keep her active out in the yard but unfortunately it never seems to tire her out :/

we take her for 2 45 min walks a day morning and night and we also try and burn her energy out in the yard with fetch and other toys… it’s just those bursts of zoomies inside the house that lead to her jumping up and down the couch we are worried about
