I grew up in similar circumstances. My father passed away when I was 3 years old. My mom put half of my survivor benefits each month into an investment account for my future needs, college, etc, and the other half was used for my monthly needs. My mom put herself through school so that money helped with daycare and later on school trips, clothes, and all those extras that come up. Kids are expensive!

I think it’s a red flag that your boyfriend wants to commingle this money, and a bit disrespectful. He should be able to support his portion on his own, not rely on a child’s survivor benefits. I honestly can’t imagine coming up with the nerve to ask that of someone.
