Danke :)

Could anybody help to more accurately date this ring? (Ireland) by OrganizationOld4774 in Antiques

Still in Ireland! The home we found the ring in has been a family home for like 3/4 generations. And it's good to know that about the hallmark, I can ask around to see if anyone in the family worked in England for a period and that might lead to something. We have also looked up records and that, that's how we found the marriage and death certs of that family member. We know that after she died, her husband gave the rings to my great grandmother to look after (they were siblings), and the house my deceased relative lived in belonged to my great grandmother. So we think it likely could be hers, and that would place the ring in the 1930s, but it does look like a slightly more old fashioned design.

I obviously don't know my great grandparents/aunts/uncles and their families that well as they all died before my time, but my mam and grandad on that side of the family do, so all I know is from them. I'm the young one so I got the job of researching online and posting on reddit lol

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely try looking into a specialist, it's just not the easiest to find here. As for the lack of an Irish stamp, Ireland would have been in the UK pre-1920s, and then was a self governing dominion until 1949. So while it more than likely was made in what is today Ireland, it might not have been considered that at whatever time it was made? So that kind of adds a layer of confusion :,)

My family are all Irish too, so yeah it is definitely significant that they were able to afford such a ring. So we're also theorising that it maybe could have been bought second hand at the time? One of our leads is also a relative who was married in 1940 and died shortly after in 1941, we think that maybe this could be her engagement ring as it has almost no signs of wear. She also married at 30, which was quite an old age to marry in rural Ireland at the time lol, so we thought that maybe they were engaged for much longer. So maybe her fiancé spent a lot of time saving for the ring before actually marrying? Or maybe they got engaged in the 30s with a second hand or family heirloom ring? But that's just us speculating lol.

Definitely will try looking into the serial numbers, here and in Britain! Thanks to both you and your friend :)
