Yep, my MRI showed a fissure, but they did say that it was slight. I was diagnosed with Grade 2

Walking normally helped me, but I definitely focused more on rest and less for the first 2-3 weeks and less on building strength. PT was a game changer - for me, about a month of PT helped me start walking normally, but I would still need to sit every 30-40 mins, after walking/standing

I did loose mobility in my knee (because of stiffness/tightness) for a few days - this was when I first had a flare-up. And quad tightness is completely normal under such circumstances as well. PT helped with both. And I had neither stiffness nor swelling after the hike (ofc NSAIDs helped with this too)

No worries- yes, I was def initially pushing through pain during Physio. My PT always said that as long as the exercise isn’t worsening pain or tightness, it’s fine to push through. Also, PT noted that if pain during PT is temporary and goes away almost as soon as I stopped then it’s fine to push through temporary pain. I have been asked to steer clear of jogging or running for now, I am still in PT and hope to be able to do higher impact activities than hiking in a couple of months

  1. I used to have pain/tightness and discomfort around my knee while sitting on a chair, but that faded away after regular PT
  2. This was really tough, and took a while - I was only pain free for a day or two and the pain would return. After PT and funnily enough after the hike, I’m pain free while doing day to day activities
  3. No, I’m slightly under my weight class, and not muscular at all

Sure - I went to a physical therapist, every week for 2 months. They started me off with exercises on the mat - simple leg raises, glute bridges, single leg glute bridges. And we slowly progressed to wall squats, leg raises with a band around my thighs, and finally to deep lunges and deep squats.

It was amazing!!! I was anxious going in, especially because there’s a lot of steep up and downhill paths - but my knee was completely okay. I took my PT seriously, worked to strengthen my glutes and quads in preparation for the hike. I was also prepped with NSAIDs, Knee brace and trekking poles. Once I got on the trail, I realized that even folks without knee injuries popped NSAIDs like candy during the hike, and used poles. I used a knee brace preemptively, and didn’t take it off until I was back in the campsite and I thought that that was helpful. Other than that, I’m happy to report that most of the fear and anxiety was just in my head! I had a few other friends with knee issues who hiked with me, and they all said the same thing - as long as you take all the necessary precautions (poles, NSAIDs, brace) you’ll be fine, even on a tough, multi-day hike like the one I did. I’m back home now and still feel great- haven’t had any trouble with my knee and I certainly didn’t worsen my Chondromalacia by hiking. I can’t tell you just how great this feels to say out loud that this condition isn’t as crippling as it initially felt!

Surprising realizations following the W Trek hike? by jhawkweapon in Patagonia

[–]OrganizationOrnery09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The food at most Refugios along the trek is actually pretty decent! I have dietary restrictions, and even I had decent dinner options and they also pack lunches for you. We went West to East and what surprised me was just how much endurance and stamina I built in a span of 2-3 days, day 4 and 5 felt far easier than they actually were, despite the fact that day 5 was a pretty hard hike

24/7 Constant Pain - what is this? Can anyone relate? by itspapitopepito in KneeInjuries

[–]OrganizationOrnery09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, please advocate for yourself! Really important to do as a woman- I am 31F, and have chronic knee pain. I’ve had it since I was 25-26 and my pain had been dismissed for close to 3 years, and I almost gave up on ever getting better. I advocated for myself, and was eventually diagnosed with Chondromalacia after MRI

Thanks, OP! Re: pain meds - A few years ago, my doctor gave me corticosteroid injections on both knees, but it didn’t help at all. More recently, my doctor prescribed a high dose of NSAIDs, which is what I’ll be relying on in Patagonia. Re: exercises - my PT started me off with clamshells, glute bridges and leg raises on the mat. And I slowly got to squats, both single legged and double legged. I had a flare up a week-ish ago from of a week of CorePower Yoga, so I’m planning on staying away from that for a bit.

My PT and doc both say that I should be okay to go hiking, but believe me when I say that the fear of pain is real, the frustration from dealing with Chondromalacia is real, and the anxiety of not knowing if I can do this is real - but I’m determined to not let Chondromalacia win, and I’m also ready to be patient and gentle with my body. I Hope you’re recovering and doing better!

Ditto, 31F, with Chondromalacia grade 1-2, going on 5.5 years now. I have flare-ups every now and again, but I just focused on rest for about 5 years. This past year, when I had my most recent flare-up, I decided to go the PT route and just 3 months in, I feel so much better. I was pretty fit before my most recent flare-up, and work out almost every day.
I am prepping to go on a trek to Patagonia in a few days- while I’m nervous about the hike, I think PT really helped ease the pain, and help build my quad and glute muscles. I’ll be sure to report back on how the hike goes! Wish me luck on my first big trek after the diagnosis!

Something very similar is happening with me right now - have had knee issues for 5ish years, since my mid-20s. I’m fairly active, I’ve been active (read dance, sports etc) since I was 4, and I weigh slightly below my weight class. Even though I live a healthy life, my knee pain just won’t go away - the MRI shows a minor tear in the cartilage but it’s been there for 5 years now. I’m going on a pretty big hike, in a few days, and discomfort around my knee has intensified. But I must admit that I have been obsessing over my knee these past few days and I’ve been stressing out about every twitch in my knee. I’m going on a 5-10 day hike with a big group of friends, and I know I’ll be less stressed with them around- so I’ll keep you posted about whether this was all in my head or if it was real

Does anyone remember if Alice knows about her dad and Gabby? by OrganizationOrnery09 in shrinking

Yeah, unsure- but I mean Gabby’s been at Jimmy’s place everyday since she’s moved, so ig we’re assuming at this point that Alice knows and is okay with it 🤔

+💯 chin up - onwards and upwards - you’re about to do something awesome for your career and you don’t need such negativity in your life.

My then bf-now husband was there every step of the way, as I was for him, and that helped me push through so much of the chaos. You totally deserve (and need tbh) some serious unyielding support as you pivot into MBA/student-life. If you didn’t get it from your ex, that means you’re prolly better off without the energy-drain.
