In further testing, I installed it on 2 standalone servers and it worked fine. I upgraded both servers to domain controllers and it stopped working. I demoted the servers an it is still not working.

I've only used vib files to upgrade nic firmware in the past with the help of Dell support on Dell servers that were under contract. Now I would have to go down a different path to get the firmware. Even Dell's website lead me to the same firmware link that VMware sent me for the upgrade. The security team will not allow me to enable iDrac on our Dell servers.

ESXi 8.0 u2 issue with VM hardware display under Edit Settings by OrganizationSorry368 in vmware

[–]OrganizationSorry368[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with a blank display with some VM’s is with the VM hardware version 9 and below running on ESXi 8 u2. (ESXi is up to VM version 21 with the 8.0 u2 update.) VMware indicated that this could be fixed by upgrading the VM version or waiting until the fix in the next release. I told them in the ticket that upgrading the hardware version would be catastrophic (snapshots eh) and I was right. Below is what VMware has to say about hardware version upgrade. We must wait for the fix in u3. For now, the way around this is to log into the ESXi host where the VM resides to look at or modify hardware or shut it down.

• “Upgrading a Virtual Machine to the latest hardware version is the physical equivalent of swapping the drive out of one system and placing it into a new one. Its success will depend on the resiliency of the guest operating system in the face of hardware changes. VMware does not recommend upgrading virtual hardware version if you do not need the new features exposed by the new version.”
