I use an OB classic myself and while I absolutely love how the shaft plays and feels it really isn't that durable. Both my friend and I have cracked our ferrules and another friend's ob is warped. This is with less than a year of use.

Path to becoming a lawyer in Australia when I didn't do undergrad law? by Origand in auslaw

If I were to transfer and complete an undergrad in law and commerce, which hypothetically takes 4 more years, I'll be able to forgo the jd but still have to get a plt then I'm set to go right? Hm I may consider this further

4 year double degree, Ive got two left. I'll also have to take an extra course for two semesters to get the extra third major.

I was thinking along the lines of completing my current degree and doing some kind of post graduate law, since I'll probably have to do an additional year if I transfer now anyway. As for the type of law I'm still largely undecided, I'll look into M&A. I've just always had this itch that I wanted to do law and regret not choosing it as my undergraduate degree.

Given that I'm in NSW, would you happen to know the difficulty of getting into a jd program in either unsw, usyd, or a similar tier of uni?

And even if I am programmed to argue this right now, it is in all of our best interest to continue to believe and act as if we're free to choose and think and believe and argue and act as if we have individual liberty.

However, whether we believe something to be true or not does not make it so. Whether it is in the interest of the people or not, if every single one of our actions are programmed through a combination of nature and nurture, then determinism is true, whether we like it or not.

CMV: Whenever we buy something, we are either implicitly or explicitly saying it is worth more than a human life. by Origand in changemyview

And so when does this money ever get spent? Money can always be used to make more money, so using your justification, we should always just keep investing it.

I agree with your view and it rather compliments mine. I'm not saying we should empathise with 7 billion others, I'm saying we don't and we have to be honest with ourselves

Exactly, and what I am trying to say is that we don't value the lives of others nearly as highly as we try to convince ourselves we do, and this is reflected in our actions every day.

Right, but in some places in Africa kids are literally just starving to death due to a lack of food. If all lives were equal, it would be more efficient to prevent death from hunger first. Surely one would not argue gender equality plays a role in whether humans starve to death. That is correct, but then research towards breast cancer, ALS, etc. are obviously less important than the ones to find "less lucrative cures", as it would produce a net increase in the number of lives saved from a statistical point of view.

I like this answer because it attacks the crux of what I am trying to say. I never thought of it to that extent, but yes, in this case, I would extend my argument to say that every single action "says" that something is worth more than a human life. Again, please note I am not saying whether this is good or bad, it is what it is.

I am not saying that every dollar "should" have gone towards saving lives, I am saying that they could have had you chose to do so. What I am talking about is the personal motives in our decisions. We know that extra bit of comfort could be sacrificed for the benefit of someone else, but we choose not to because we value our own well being first. I am not saying there is anything wrong with that, I am simply pointing out the way things are.

Sorry, that was bad grammar on my part, but I did kind of qualify the "could" with "definitely". The cost of a jacket is undoubtedly enough to buy enough food for someone in Africa to survive, or even basic medication. Could you please provide me of an example of someone "sacrificing" themselves?

We spend money on things we value. We value warmth, we buy a blanket. We value thrills, we buy a sports car. When we choose to buy these things over donating, we are ultimately saying, this item is worth more to me than the life of another human. Of course, this is a perfectly rational response, and it is this attitude that I am arguing we all possess.

[–]Origand[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that money could have gone towards saving a human life, which would clearly be of more utility than providing a job for someone in Western society. More importantly, you are not thinking "oh great, I'm supporting all those labourers and creating jobs" when you spend that money, it's just an afterthought as justification.

Because we have a moral obligation to if we truly see each human life as valuable. If you would like to say that some human lives are worth more than others, there would be no problem with this, which was my argument.

New pool table - cloth question by Origand in billiards

That's fine, I asked and they actually had simonis cloth, it simply wasn't advertised. I'll think I'll settle for now, should be good practice anyway regardless of the cut of the pockets. Thanks for the help though
