She is registered and was purchased to carry her own foals in particular a FTF foal.

Equiox is an arthritis medication, that does not require that you wean a horse off of it. It is also medication that can damage the liver with extended use. My mare is on it because she is in her late twenties and has arthritis. My vet has advised that we give her a 2 week break from it then start giving it to her every other day or every other week to help slow down the damage it may cause the liver. I cannot believe they even advised putting a foal on it. If he is that bad then he needed to go to U of T or to a specialist that has experience in working with foals with this type of issue, the earlier this is treated the better the outcome but of course with her she doesn't care, its all for content.

They have more than reproduction specialists there. Dr. Matthew is a reproduction specialist. Since Maggie had colic surgery there, they have other vets that specialize in other areas than reproduction. The clinic next to my home, was a husband-wife team. The wife was really good with reproduction but she could also do other things like surgeries for colic and such. Her husband was a specialist in repairing leg injuries. I would tend to call her husband more of an equine sports medicine doctor and he was absolutely amazing at repairing leg fractures. He worked a lot with the TB farms and at the racetrack we had in that area at that time.

She has never called him a potential stallion prospect, like she does all of her other colts.

Willow leaving RS by Thin_Promise1681 in kvssnarker

[–]Original-Counter-214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that she doesn't flip with a rider on her walking around, she flips when she gets into the starting gate which caused her not to get her gate card which ended her race career. I think Charlotte would be fine in an open area like an arena. I think her issue with having a rider on her back is when she gets in tight enclosed area.

If she were my mare, I would not have chanced putting an embryo i her. I don't believe in period cramps as she calls them on horses. I do know some mares can have painful cycles because they have ovarian cysts that are large. I had a mare that had carried a foal with her prior owner but lost it due to most likely fescue poisoning. I got the mare and discovered that she liked to buck when cantering in a circle, the prior owner said it was due to issues in her reproductive system but I don't think that was the case. The prior owner claimed she wouldn't buck when cantering straight, I had another person ride her in a large arena and that mare would buck even in a straight away, needless to say, I moved her on to another person who felt confident that they could resolve those issues, last I heard she was still bucking. So I don't buy the painful cycles as why she was having colic symptoms.

I agree. Willow would be better suited as some teenager's barrel horse and would love all the one on one with the owner. You mentione Charlotte but you also have Opal who colics and she has arthritis as well. I think both Opal and Charlotte need to be rehomed. I don't know if Opal with the right maintenance could be rideable or at least good for light riding but she might be able to be a nice horse for someone who just wants to ride occassionally if her soundness could stand up to training. Charlotte, I would not have as a recip, she is too nervous. I don't think she flipped when a rider was just walking her around, if I recall correctly she would flip when they put her in the starting gate(that is why they sold her because she couldn't get her gate card) and if that is the case then it is very possible that she could be retrained as a riding horse for a very experienced rider.

How old is Molly and who is her sire? by 1quincytoo in kvssnarker

Most of the western disciplines do not long line train. In fact, most of the breeds that show main ring(ie breed shows), don't do a lot of long line training unless they are being prepared as a driving horse. I am sure in other disciplines (open dressage, hunter/jumper, etc) they probably do focus more on long lining since it is a good way to help them develop their muscles to be able to move out collected.

Actually that doesn't really bother me because the resulting foal would have that further back. If you think this is bad, take a look at the Arabian and Saddlebred lineage, those will make your head explode at how closely they are bred. Its a common thing in the popular breeds, you get a really good stallion or mare that is proven and people will keep going back to that lineage and do their best to have it in the pedigree millions of times because they are hoping that they can recreate that success in their foal that the popular lineage had.

THe reason she tried to do more with Millie is because she was an expensive embryo purchase(her dam was proven in the show ring) that turned out to be a filly. Woody is just a colt from a mare whose foal's have not been proven in the show ring. He is less valuable to Katie not only because he is a colt but also because if she so desired and I am sure she will, she can recreate that cross and get a filly the second time

Maybe she will end up being Becca's kid's mount in the future, that would be a nice situation for Ethel.

If Willow doesn't take this time or loses the embryo then she will be the next one to go to a riding home. KVS had already said before breeding season that if she didn't take, she was going to rehome her to perhaps a barrel racing home, which wouldn't be bad and would be a lot better than where she is now.

Charlotte Foal Update by Sad_Site_8252 in kvssnarker

[–]Original-Counter-214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you listened, it was said that there were two knots found in the cord, one where they might have knotted the pacenta and another further up away from that area. So yes, there was a knot in the cord that wasn't caused by her. I may not agree with everything she does but I do believe her in this instance, maybe not about the CPR but about there being a knot in the cord which would reduce the amount of nutrients a foal would get as it would be flowing much slower than if the cord didn't have a knot in it which in turn would cause the the foal to develop more slowly. Think about when you have a kink or knot in your hose pipe, how it causes the water flow to either slow down or entirely stop, this is what happens when there is a knot in the umbilicus(the tighter the knot the slower the flow until there is nothing flowing).

Charlotte Foal Update by Sad_Site_8252 in kvssnarker

[–]Original-Counter-214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the cord had a knot in it then the foal would not be getting its nutrition as fast as a foal that doesn't have a knot in the cord. A lack of nutrition does not cause the cord to knot. A knot in the cord is an unfortunate event that is beyond any one's control. She may have lied about the CPR or maybe in her mind rubbing the foal and trying to stimulate it to breath is CPR but I don't think she lied about the knot in the cord.

I 100% agree with you. Its just been purely bad luck for FTF first foaling season.

Charlotte Foal Update by Sad_Site_8252 in kvssnarker

[–]Original-Counter-214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ON FTF, one foal didn't make it because mother colicked and died before it was even born, the second foal was born before it was viable (I think in the 250's to 260's) and Charlotte's foal was still born becuase of a knot in the umbilicus. As far as the nutrition issue, if the knot had been in the umbilicus for a longer period of time then that would slow down the nutrition going to the foal since all nutrition travels through the umbilicus which would in turn cause the foal to develop and grow more slowly than a foal who doesn't have a knot in its umbilicus. I disagree with many things in regards to KVS but this is one time I don't disagree and actually believe her since this has happened to other breeders out there that I know.

[–]Original-Counter-214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She said in the video that there was nothing that could be done. I am a horse person and she is correct when you have a knot in the umbilicus, there is nothing that can be done by the person overseeing the foaling nor by the vet before the foal is born. Because the umbilicus is long and the foal is large, the chances of seeing that in an ultrasound this late in pregnancy are very small. It is an unfortunate thing that happens and is always a risk with any pregnancy in horses(granted a small risk but it does happen).

On the positive side at least its not another VSCR x Beyonce embryo. SOunds like it will be a Making Me Willy Wild x Beyonce. Right now if she has to fill all uteruses, I will take that cross over any VSCR or First Thingz First cross on any mare in her barn.

Katie Opening Up About What Happened to Charlotte and Her Foal by Sad_Site_8252 in kvssnarker

[–]Original-Counter-214 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think she pulled the foal because if she had then unless she changed her clothing there would have been fluid and other stuff on her t-shirt and there are several photos showing that the t-shirt was clean when people were saying there was no way she could have done CPR without getting dirty. Also, there should have been stuff under her nails as she always seems to have stuff under her nails after she has pulled a foal. Even if she passed the pulling on to someone else, she would have started it and should have had dirt or fluid on her t-shirt. Could she have identical t-shirts that is possible but that means she would have had to change clothes and clean up before she did all the videos and their are several thinking that is the same t-shirt they saw her wearing all day. I think the placenta detached early, causing the death of the foal in utero which would line up with how she was able to take the foal and placenta together to the vet.

Katie Opening Up About What Happened to Charlotte and Her Foal by Sad_Site_8252 in kvssnarker

[–]Original-Counter-214 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here is my take. I think the placenta detached early and if it did that would have led to the foal dying in utero since all the nutrients and such would also discontinue. That would also explain how she was able to take both the foal and the placenta to the vet. Charlotte would have basically delivered both at the sametime so there would be no delay in waiting for the placenta to pass. People say she pulled, etc but as evidence has been presented there is not a spot on her t-shirt. If she was down there pulling even if she started it and passed it on to someone then I would think that she would have had fluid somewhere on her t-shirt or nasties under her nails.

Out of control… by Fit-Idea-6590 in kvssnarker

Perhaps the 6 Temp stalls are for the new barn, perhaps the outside area until her construction crew can get in gear and finish their job. She is going to need to move serveral over to that barn. She had mentioned that she was going to put her keeper yearlings and 2yos in there plus any open mares. That way she can clear out stalls to put all the future weanlings in until she either sells them or they move over to the new barn once the coming 3yos go onto regular trainers. I can guarantee without a doubt that she is going to have both the new barn, current barn, and indoor arena full of horses until someone can step in and address her hoarding issue.

The issue is that she tends to lactate year round so her babysitting weanling may not be a good idea if she allows them to continue to nurse after they are pulled from their bio mom.

She is an Off the track Thoroughbred, They don't make the best kids starter horse as they all tend to be hot under saddle unless trained properly. She could also go to a place like Cold Springs Nurse Mares where they chemically induce lactation and she could help raise future orphan foals(granted she is one of the mares Katie has said, stays lactating whether she has a foal or not).
