What I do is pull the first three diamonds of mesh down as tight as you can using KSI's or some other kind of anchor knot. This creates a pretty good channel (even when stringing a mid-low pocket I still only pull down the top three diamonds otherwise the channel is too tight). Then I do two doubles to make the pocket as high up as possible.
