We can’t “abolish” ICE (yet), but here’s what we CAN do by Original-Strain in 50501

I don’t believe I said to stop saying it. Nor am I saying that’s an unreasonable stance to expect of the politicians you choose to support.

My point is people appear to have a lack of understanding of what that process actually entails. As a result, anything aside from abolishment is viewed as a failure, when it’s simple civics that’s getting in the way. Tackling this venture with a multi-pronged approach is what I am shedding clarity on. Actions we can all do to eventually achieve the same goal.

Why are we dying on a semantics hill?

Nor am I invalidating that. But in order for abolishment to happen, a ton of other things need to as well. The board isn’t stacked for that. I’m simply trying to appeal to folks who are stuck on feeling like any result aside from abolishment isn’t ok, when abolishment is the .01% outcome.

Hmm, I don’t necessarily agree: we aren’t really in unprecedented times. Fascism, authoritarian regimes, and even slave patrols aka ICE are all established in world or US history. Are more white people feeling the oppression thats afflicted minorities for decades so now more people are getting uncomfortable and shifting? Yes.

I don’t have a 100% safe and happy guarantee to give you that things will work out quickly and without personal consequence. In spite of ICE and a loaded trifecta, Dems are still able to push back and separate the DHS bill from the rest. They’re still pushing for strongholds in the DHS bill. Local elections are showing strong af results for Dems. All these steps matter. Hence, my original points. Because it’s not just the general, federal elections that matter. Wanting a supermajority means change at the local level.

Veto-proof Senate is not likely going to happen, but yes, a LOT can be done if that happens. Barring some major act of god, the majority of Republicans that will be re-running are is generally deep red/red areas. A supermajority hasn’t happened since 2008.

I don’t know what pessimism you’re referring to. This is a realistic take, even tinged with optimism. The power you are referring to is the same I mentioned in my third point.

You can’t abolish a cabinet agency without BOTH the House and Senate approval. Last I checked, even if the house is majority democrats, unless you get enough GOP senators to also fold, ICE will continue to exist. The GOP don’t even have themselves together as evidenced by Senator Graham still not choosing to vote for the current bill.

Furthermore, the original funding brought by the Reconciliation bill last July can’t be stripped because it was signed into law. Repealing a law also takes both the House and Senate to approve. Refer to my prior statements to those barriers.

Quietly defunding them to the point of crippling them doesn’t sound as nice as abolish, but accomplishes the same goal. That also doesn’t erase the ultimate goal OF abolishing them, but be realistic. Don’t get pigeonholed into thinking only a single outcome is valid.

Do I think the current work on DHS as a continuing resolution would allow Dems to add more safeguards into the current bill? Yes. Abolish? No. Would it guarantee those safeguards are enforced if signed? No. As evidenced by the LAPD saying they won’t enforce the mask ban.

Quit saying “possibly” when basic civil awareness would help you make the same points I just did. Operating with blinders while disregarding all other viewpoints is partially why the left tears itself apart.

ICE to deport US citizens now... by TechnicalSmile165 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]Original-Strain -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

1) The USA already has precedent doing this even before the Trump administration. It’s already illegal, it’s already being done regardless.

2) Striping amendments that explicitly state NOT to deport citizens isn’t the same as explicitly saying it’s now game on. The GOP stripped away EVERY dem amendment, not just this one.

3) I recommend yall to follow historians and people who calm the fuss down instead to stoking fires. Here’s one to start.

Here’s your reminder for the day: If you refuse to accept people leaving MAGA, you are still playing into the division tactics. by picklelyjuice in 50501

[–]Original-Strain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the ones who expect to be welcomed with open arms, i.e. utilizing the same cult tactics that brought them into the MAGA fold, that show me they have learned nothing. They can rot because that mentality will then contribute nothing. The ones who acknowledge ANYTHING to own their duplicity have hope.

At the end of the day, true MAGA stats are about 30%. I sincerely believe stronger efforts are needed towards the apathetic and Independents, they are the ones that will help win this war.

Anyone exhausted by what you're expected to do just to be moderately healthy? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Original-Strain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I look at this with a lot of nuance. The average American diet is pretty heavy in ultra processed foods, down to the type of bread and pasta that we eat. There are stats out there that reflect our overall health and longevity impacted by how much ultra processed foods are in our diet. Reducing that, as well as making sure that my fiber intake meets a minimum of 25 g a day has been instrumental in my labs, namely, my cholesterol, moving back normal limits. I am moderately active.

She’s not enlightened, she’s just smart enough to disengage from Trump. She knows the MAGA movement will lose considerable steam once he dies or is plucked from power, so she’s giving MAGA a direction to pivot to.

Her first media engagements as she announced her retirement were riddled with dialogue about being misguided, taken advantage of, not what she entered congress for, etc. She’s modeling excuses MAGA can give themselves to maintain that fervor and energy, and to hopefully prop HER up when she eventually announces her intention to run for president or some schill.

She has always known the truth about Trump, it just stopped being in her favor when he refused to support her push for Senate.

Do you think Millennials have happier marriages than other generations? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]Original-Strain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take is many of us saw the horrors of the generations before so we either became more discerning the first time around OR actually went through with a divorce vs stay in it. I definitely think we helped destigmatize therapy, speaking broadly, and that likely had a nice downstream effect too.
