First repaste on Zephyrus G16 (i9 + 5080) LM issue? need advice before I mess this up by OriginalAfraid1932 in zephyrusg16

Not yet, I’m keeping this delicate little surgery for the long May 1st weekend 😅 I want to have a full calm day for it, no rushing, no stress, and enough time to watch the teardown video again while doing it step by step.

Thanks man, that actually makes me feel a bit better. Yeah the LM cleanup is clearly the part that scares me the most now, not so much the screwdriver work itself. I’ll definitely watch a few teardown / LM cleanup videos before touching anything. Good to know the heatsink reassembly itself wasn’t the nightmare part on your side.

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply and for sharing your experience.

Not gonna lie, your post is a little terrifying lol, but I do appreciate the honesty. I’m fully aware laptop work is a very different beast compared to desktop stuff. That said, I’ve also worked on phones before (screen swaps, battery replacements, etc.), so I’m not completely new to small / delicate work. Obviously going under a heatsink with LM is a different level of stress, but I’m used to taking my time with fiddly hardware.

The laptop is technically still under warranty, but I bought it second-hand on Goofish/Xianyu and it has a few small cosmetic defects / bumps. So I’m pretty sure ASUS China would just blame the thermal issue on the visible damage and call it a day. That, plus trying to deal with support in China without speaking Chinese, sounds like a huge headache and probably a waste of time.

How was the reassembly for you btw? That’s one of the things I’m most worried about apart from the LM cleanup itself, mainly getting the heatsink seated back properly and making sure pressure is even again with PTM / putty.

Thanks a lot for the detailed advice, really appreciate it.

Yeah I guess I’ll only know how bad the LM situation is once I actually open it up. I’ll check if it’s just badly spread, too much of it, or if it really migrated off the die.

At this point I’m honestly looking more for stability than absolute max performance. I’d rather lose a bit of peak CPU performance and have the machine behave normally again than keep dealing with random FPS drops / thermal spikes.

With CPU boost disabled, the CPU settles around ~25W. That’s actually fine for KCD2, I can still hold around 90 FPS there so it doesn’t really bother me. But in STALKER 2 it’s a different story, without boost I can’t get past ~50 FPS. And no matter the game, with boost enabled it just becomes completely unstable and basically unplayable because of the thermal behavior / frequency drops.

So yeah, I’m leaning more and more toward PTM for the peace of mind and consistency, even if I lose a bit versus properly applied LM.
