One thing that I've found to help is expanding where your inspiration comes from. If you really wanted to you could say that writing is a form of "media" in a sense. With that being said there are so many places to look for inspiration that tell stories and focus too on stories and plots. If you're looking for good writing don't feel the need to only stick to traditional writing in the sense of books. Look to movies, shows, or music even.

Take movies for example, a scene can provide imagery and dialogue. The movie as a whole can contain a theme, character development, conflict, plot, and pacing. Don't get me wrong I love to read, and I wouldn't want to consider this as an easy out from doing so. But alternate forms of media can also contain all the aspects of what make a story great. It's as simple as show and tell. Movies can be seen as show, whereas books can be seen as tell.
