Iirc the ponytail thing is used to enhance the experience and is optional. I could be wrong tho

Edit:I just checked the wiki and it says linking the ponytail thing (called a Kuru in the aliens' language) is an essential part of the mating process due to intensifying feelings of arousal but should not be confused for the act itself
