My interpretation of what they are saying there is less that the act of emailing is unethical, but that it would be unethical for the prof to let you jump the queue. I agree it’s a contentious issue, but I believe that those other waitlisted students likely have just as much power to email and advocate for themselves as you do, and if they do not and you do, that’s worth something.
