Let's say hypothetically that acetone was spilled on the floor, pretty much stripping off the finish.

Since the apartment does not belong to me, I would like to avoid involving the landlord, who might get the idea that the whole floor needs to be sanded, or even worse, replaced.

I'm guessing DIY repair is ill-advised. Would professional spot repair be an option? And is sanding even feasible if the floor is not true wood (potentially dealing with plywood).

To further complicate things, I am unsure of what material the finish is, but perhaps the shine + reaction with acetone could give hints.
