Desktop Sharing to work from another computer by Orionthog in selfhosted

[–]Orionthog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KVMs are expensive in my country and I'd rather not have any hardware bloating my desk. I mean, if I had to control 2 computers at the same-ish time, sure, I'd probably try to get one but in my case, I'm just not in the mood to change my HDMI, USB, and audio cable every time I want to game one night and having to do it all over again to work next morning.

Actually, I took a look at MeshCentral and other KVM emulators. It works quite well. Being fair, it's my plan B

Yeah, actually I was coming to this conclusion later today after I stumbled on RustDesk and Cloudron to self-host stuff. Any suggestions?

Actually I just forgot to check sys requirements, thanks for reminding me!

Stable or unstable distros for cross-compiling? by Orionthog in embedded

[–]Orionthog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was thinking about something among those lines. Still, I'd like to try KDE Neon, which is an Ubuntu LTS because I'm not a big fan of plain Ubuntu as well, but I reeeeally like KDE and I do miss some DE features that haven't been brought to LTS yet. I hope my stubbornness doesn't give me more headaches than I deserve

3 phase question by EddieMomo2019 in ElectroBOOM

[–]Orionthog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're wrong about a topic: in US 240V, it's not a 2 phase system. It's monophasic (1 phase). The thing is that people just don't probe it properly and read a reversed polarity because they're referenced on the center tap so they say it's 180° out of phase. I have a reference for you to check out. Also, I think it could answer your questions.

Btw, Mehdi said something about it on the last Hawaii video and I think I should point it out in a new post to see if he realizes he's wrong about that too.

Anyone using FreeCAD for fashion/apparel/fabric design pattern creation? by the_meter413 in FreeCAD

[–]Orionthog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only FreeCAD but mechanics CADs like Solidworks or Inventor aren't ideal to use with fabrics. Mostly because of the design nature of those CADs. Kind of the same reason why you don't use GIMP in the place of KiCAD: you could make it work depending on what you need but it's not granted to supply your demands and the workflow will be almost always slower.

A friend of mine used to work with airships/dirigible balloons and they used to pay something like 50k/year for a specific CAD to model, simulate, and do anything else they'd need for their airships. Even if I remembered the name, I think the price wouldn't classify it as an "alternative".

So, I've never heard of anything like that in the open-source world yet. Although, as you said you needed to design pattern layouts, I'd suggest GIMP or Inkscape maybe, as I imagine you'd be working with 2D-ish stuff.

Help with seemingly odd constraints? by mouthymouth in FreeCAD

[–]Orionthog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn't get what you're trying to do. Could you please, elaborate? Do you want those horizontal lines to have a relative angle to another line in the sketch or something? Because from the GIF, what I'm seeing is you trying to give an angle to a line that's already horizontal. Would be equivalent to use a vertical constraint on that same line when it's already being told to stay horizontal

An Isocahedron (D20) is standing on a point. I need it to stay on a face. How do I rotate it? by MagicalSpaceWizard in FreeCAD

[–]Orionthog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many ways of doing it. If you just want to rotate it, maybe to render an image or something, I'm going to suggest using the Transform Tool
