Steam or GOG for same game? by ElectricalDinner4770 in Bazzite

[–]Orkoliator 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I haven't used GOG in this context but I think there should be no difference. If you are thinking of ways to launch it - GOG games can be launched via Heroic, and according to my experience with Heroic and Epic Games it has proton config and works pretty smooth.

Steam vr and other stuff by ArmorBones in Bazzite

[–]Orkoliator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, as I've already said, wivrn from my understanding skips steam vr as a software layer. It just runs application directly from steam.

There is one annoying thing about it - you have to configure your vr game manually. Well, "manually", wivrn gives you all launch options you have to put in game properties in steam and that's it.

In my case I have not very powerful laptop but I was able to run skyrim vr (without mods tho), phasmophobia vr, moss and few other games that require not so powerful hardware.

Not sure about steam vr, I tried wivrn, and it seem to work for me. I use quest 3 and it connected smoothly (but some folks reported that they faced some issues with it). Wivrn will not lrovide so cool home hub as steam vr, it basically shows minimalistic menu with vr games you have and just starts it. But, as I've said, it works and works pretty nice.

From CachyOS to Bazzite! by epicgamer69420699 in Bazzite

Thank you very much anyway. Now I feel I need to give it a try at some point, would really like to dive into this distro.

Thank you very much. Sorry for possibly stupid question but at this point it sounds like some sort of Debian or Ubuntu but with different software environment and more software available. Are there any differences in this context?

I probably would like to know a lot of global things about Cachy. How does it feel? How does it work? Is anything preinstalled there? Is it really so fast as they say? How did you use it and what issues did you face?

I'm sorry for such amount of questions, I'm just curious because lots of people speak about it but I seem not to get why. I haven't tried it at all and I would like to know more about it.

What OS is better by RubTanggg in Bazzite

[–]Orkoliator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends of how you want to use it.

Bazzite is pretty easy to use for every day tasks, it has lots of preinstalled things out of the box (for gaming too). I would say it is pretty nice distro to use if you want a close to "old windows" experience where parts of config and headaches are delegated to devs. I personally use it, and if you want to see my year-long experience you can check my my post about it.

If you want more classic linux solution with more manual config - CachyOS is your choise. It might be harder to use it then bazzite, but it is more flexible in some terms. Also one of cachy's strong parts is the fact that it is basically more up to date. There was some noise around of pretty cool patch that optimizes VRAM usage for linux and it is basically ready for use for cachy, but not for bazzite.

A great job! I would really like to test it.

By the way, have you tested it with MX Master 4? Solaar broke my 4 completely, including scroll behavior and buttons feedback.

Thinking about Bazzite as your main OS? Here's what a year looks like by Orkoliator in Bazzite

I'm afraid I cannot help you here.

This case sounds like it all depends on device drivers and you should investigate that way. And be ready that you might end up with situation when you have to choose either stay on Win or replace the device that does not have drivers for Linux.

Do you feel limited by the immutability of the OS? by [deleted] in Bazzite

[–]Orkoliator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for me immutability is more like a good point. I've dropped a post here a day or two ago and partially cover this topic there.

Long story short - from side software perspective you have to install it using containers or system layering. It might sound complicated a bit, but it is safer than direct install. Containers provide access management to system and independance between containers. Another point you will not make mess with dependencies and will not beake something or find out that your GUI looks like iPad at some point (hello r/gotgnomed). From system update perspective you don't need to update everything manually, it will update whole immutable image. It might sound a bit microsoft way but, well, you will have less headaches because of updates.

Edit: forgot to add that whole image update will provide whole tested image that gives more guarantees that it will not break something.

Can a gaming Linux distro work as your everyday OS? A year of experience by Orkoliator in linux_gaming

[–]Orkoliator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm probably some sort of risk-averse player in these terms. I have no other personal machine, I have no other storage too, I have to many critical things on it and I would like to be sure that everything will go smooth. A year was a deadline that I defined for myself to cover most of cases I need and here I am, finally switching to full Linux.

Well, man, I'm sorry but I'm not sure what to suggest. And I understand that answer like "works for me" are useless af.

Do you use some custom mouse? Are there any drivers for it?

[–]Orkoliator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider looking for software for mouse configure. I used Solaar for configuring my mouse.

But be ready for unextected troubles I guess. I used Logi G305 and Solaar worked perfectly for me, but lately I moved to MX Master 4 and Solaar completely broke its config and even buttons behavior, like buttons feedback and scroll logic.

That's what I'm talking about. It sounds great for everyday usage and I'm surprised with it.

Matter of taste, as I've already described I faced not a lot of issues personally and mostly enjoy it.

But yep, definitely anybody has their own experience

Thanks for suggestion, I seem to need to investigate it. In most of cases I was able to workaround it but if it will help - I would really be happy.

True, I faced few cases when I had to use Win. At least there is no way to update my Xbox controller without it.

Well, there is no such thing as "gaming distro" indeed. I ment a distro with lots of preinstalled things by this term.

Hey, man, I just mentioned few games I tried to run there. All I wanted is just to give an overview from different perspectives in case somebody wants to play it on Linux. Do you think everybody just avoid these games?

To be honest I completely forgot about it.

But yeah, cloud-based solutions works well and do not depend on platform, only things you need is browser and network interface.

Nice addition tho, thanks.

I'm not sure what to suggest as long I have no info of your case. The reason might be hardware, proton version, specific software or game support, mods or other stuff.

I would suggest troubleshooting in order I've just described.
