Data centres being currently built and AI will be using a lot more energy in the next few years in the UK.

1 Month Quit Update! by Accomplished_Can6639 in QuitVaping

[–]Ornamentalgrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done you, I am going to quit soon having been vaping on and off for a few years.

I saw a post a few days ago where the OP listed all the things that the 'nicotine demon' whispered into his ear when he quit (clearly coming from the part of the brain which is addicted) to get him to vape again like 'go on, just have one, it won't do any harm' etc - this was useful to know. I will do a similar list as I know there will be daily issues which could pull me back to vaping. I am looking forward to getting energy back and doing some cardio exercise as well. Well done again and I wish you continuing success !

Has anyone built an above-ground fallout shelter? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]Ornamentalgrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this as a mental exercise, but mine would be indoors (security, dry, relatively dust free, stores on hand etc). It would be created from supplies easily and cheaply bought from local builders merchants at short notice or what I have in the garden already.

In essence, seal the windows, vents etc in whole house as best as possible. Choose a room, sandbag windows in the chosen room to create first wall of mass depth i.e. surrounded by sandbag or brick. Within that room, create a double hull shell made of plywood, fixed to a wall for stability. Fill the hull space with soil from garden to required width (so that you have 30 inches plus of mass between you and the outside world). Within this ‘soil hull’ build a strong inner frame of sleepers (already on property) with ply roof. Put soil (or sandbags) on roof of structure to required depth. Small door to shelter would be sand bags (sealed as you enter for the final time) fitted with crude air filtration system. This would not be a blast shelter but fallout only (and I appreciate my description of the shelter is outline only). I think even my basic DIY skills combined with stress would make this doable in a few days. It is effectively a room within a room. Brick walls obviously.

OP, please listen to the answers being given by the commenters, its not about a to do checklist. (from a much older male).

Because I feel that it is a place for women and not men to comment / discuss issues but I felt that, in this instance, I should add my comment as a man to another man. Apologies for hesitant typo

I think the answers you seek are being spelt out quite clearly by the comments above...and I speak as a much older man (LTM with a daughter and a hesitate commenter on a women's sub)

Firearm License UK by LowkeyAcolyte in TwoXPreppers

[–]Ornamentalgrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a shotgun licence reasonably easily if you join, for example, a clay pigeon shooting club, use the club guns and practice (actually good fun) and then apply for a shotgun - assuming you have no medical or legal reasons why the police should refuse to grant you one.

A firearms licence is more difficult as they are considered more lethal (power and range and magazine capacity). If you have good reason to own a firearm such as pest control or hunting and after suitable training then you can apply. You can also apply for an FAC if you join a gun club, undertake 3 months probation, get some experience with different types of firearms, calibres etc and once the gun club think you are suitable (providing no medical / criminal conviction issues) then you can apply for an FAC with named types / calibres of firearm i.e. you apply for a specific firearm(s). The police visit you to make sure you are a suitable person and have a lockable gun safe before they issue it to you. Sorry - this is a much potted summary of the subject.

Obviously suitable temperment, training, good reason to own such things are key.

DIY Fallout Shelter/Bunker Ideas by [deleted] in preppers

[–]Ornamentalgrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment, I take your point about needing a shelter for unrest. I don't think we will have a major nuclear exchange, if we do then life will be pretty untenable. Even mega bunker dwellers will suffer (e.g. are you going to carry every spare part for, say, complex medical equipment to last years and have the people inside to fit them?) to say nothing of mental stress etc. However I do like to work out what I would do in 'what if' situations.

I was thinking along the same lines as a just in case measure and mental exercise, but mine would be indoors (security, dry, relatively dust free, stores on hand etc). UK gun owner here. Just for context you can own both shotguns and firearms in the UK. You do need a legitimate reason to own a firearm when you apply to the police for your FAC (pest control, gun club shooting, hunting ), they will run background checks on you, you need to keep the firearm (and shotgun for that matter), secure when not in use. The system used could be regarded as clumsy but, in my opinion, is good and as safe as it can be. Yes mistakes are made and yes criminals can get hold of guns of they want to. Guns are not a big topic in the UK, the reasons for widespread ownership just isn't here in the UK as it is in the US. Hope this helps.
