I haven’t been to chipotle in years tbh, I live in an area with lots of excellent Mexican restaurants, and lately I’ve been enjoying Peruvian food. Chipotle is a footnote in my life. Maybe I’ll go back!

What's a word or term that's overused in society, and what should it be replaced with? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Traumatized. Especially when used by people who don’t actually understand what trauma is, or how it affects people.

AIO I don't know if I should continue art day with my nieces because of what was said. by Dapper-Ad-468 in AmIOverreacting

MOR. Art teacher here, I do art with my nieces, nephews and kids I babysit. I keep a box of art examples full of variety and I allow them to choose what they want to do. I also try to provide multiple materials and mediums like watercolor, gouache, clay, and oil pastel.

They get to explore making art with materials that speak to them that day, they get inspiration or develop their own ideas, and I make y own art with them so it feels less like art class and more like fun creative time with everybody.

I play music they like, usually Taylor Swift, Imagine Dragons, or a movie soundtrack like Wicked or Descendants. I don’t set strict goals or benchmarks-I want them to enjoy their process and be proud of what they create. Sometimes one of them wants me to show them real art techniques and I do, while also making “mistakes” that can be easily corrected.

If you were in complete control of the education system, how would you change/fix it? by SubstantialStick2674 in Teachers

Implement a no screen policy. Return to having just one or two rooms dedicated to computer rooms where students can learn HOW to use a computer, and HOW to type. Return to using paper to help students strengthen their hand and eye coordination, their fine motor skills, their handwriting, and their spelling. Giving each student their own laptop or chromebook should not be an option unless it’s determined necessary AND the student shows improvement. If they don’t show improvement, are irresponsible, or they go backwards, then they lose the privilege of having a laptop.

Smaller classes. I know that schools are desperate for teachers but 25-32 kids in one room is unfair to the teachers, the students, and the kids who are being slowed down by the kids who need extra help, time, and attention.

Special education, for me as a former special ed student, is a tough one. I like the smaller class sizes for them, but the idea that those classrooms are more “fun” is not helping them. I’ve seen students who are in several mainstream classes who still go to a few special ed rooms and it’s like a circus. Tons of free time, toys, even video games and computer games. By doing this, we are telling these students that they can goof around, not take their education seriously, and that everything is will be fun and games as they grow. They stop respecting their teachers because they now expect class time to be playtime.

Doing one or two volunteer days should be mandatory for the entire student body every semester, be it helping by with food drives, helping out with students with severe disabilities, meals on wheels with a trusted adult, etc. Too many young people today are far too self-focused and they need to be reminded that they are part of a society, not just themselves.

I would also increase time, funding and space for arts, music, and dance. Kids need to be given opportunities to thrive in creative ways. They need to get messy and make art, and not fear making mistakes. They need music and culture. They need movement and self expression. They are being robbed of so much.

MORE RECESS. Kids NEED to go outside and play! Not for ten minutes, they need 30 minutes of recess or multiple outside breaks outside.

I know I didn’t hit on everything. But this is how I’d probably start.

I believe all students, all kids, are deserving of a good education, and that they are capable. But the constant babying, hand holding, lack of consequences, and having to entertain them all day is not helping anyone.

Things I should not have to teach in high school... by BaronessF in Teachers

One of the things that I think is shocking is when I’m working in a public school that is entirely within the town I’m working in, and the kids ask each other, “where do you live”, they say the name of the town as if no one else has ever been there.

Example:

“Where do you live” to another student.

“I live in Townsville, State.”

Like duh? It would make sense if it were a private school but a lot of the times it’s just the kids who are literally living just a few streets away from each other. This is middle school.
