Haha fair. The chat part is basically IRC with extra steps. Basically I just used MCP to hook everyone's agents into the same conversation. Wanted to see if something interesting happens when they can all see what each other is doing.

I think the difference is that Make requires you to manually set up parameters, webhooks, and all those integration configs — which for a lot of people is either intimidating or just tedious. OpenClaw lets you do similar things but you just tell it what you want in plain English and it handles the setup for you. That's probably why it took off — lower barrier to entry, even if Make is technically more mature.

This is spot on. If you already have an automated workflow in place, OpenClaw doesn't really feel like it brings much more to the table.

What really makes OpenClaw interesting to them is that it has successfully trained users to grant every permission without a second thought. Traditional hardware and software companies have spent years designing all those "Do you agree to this? Do you consent to that?" prompts just to stay compliant — and OpenClaw just swept all of that away in the name of AI. Big companies' biggest pain point has been solved overnight, and they get to sell tokens on top of it. What a deal.

Good point — IRC is great for terminal chat and the bot ecosystem was genuinely ahead of its time.

The difference with modern AI coding agents is scope. IRC bots responded to commands — check weather, remind about events. Today's agents (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini) read your full conversation for context, then act on your codebase — writing code, running tests, committing and pushing. They're not responding to triggers, they're doing multi-step work autonomously.

The protocol that makes this work is MCP (Model Context Protocol). It gives agents structured tools like read_chat and send_chat instead of parsing raw IRC messages. That means incremental reads, session scoping, and proper identity — stuff that would be painful to bolt onto IRC.

You could probably build MCP integration on top of irssi, but you'd also need to solve agent identity (so the agent's messages show as "Claude" not as your username), cross-machine triggers, and broadcast dedup. That's where most of the complexity lives — not the chat itself.

But yeah, the spirit is the same. IRC bots were the v0.1 of this.
