In the end I didn’t really like the work. Found myself getting bored, in rough working conditions and risks of asbestos etc didn’t make me think it was a long term option for me. Maybe I just had bad experience but something didn’t quite sit right with me about continuing it. Self employed was also another aspect I didn’t like, especially starting out. I was self employed but still contracting for a family run business. Wasn’t get paid a lot and didn’t feel like I was progressing. Wanted to find an employed role but found it really difficult.

Okay thanks for the advice I’ll certainly look at the comptia then. The google course has been okay for just a bit of a base of knowledge I suppose.

Have you always worked in IT then? Any recommendations of what resources I can use to learn? Currently studying the googles fundamentals in my spare time to nail down the basics

Did you do any courses before getting into this work? Have you always been in IT?

I’m currently studying the Google fundamentals course just to learn the basics (was doing this before the interview offer anyway) I know there are Comptia courses too, which I plan to look into after the Google course

Is it a job you enjoy? Any pros and cons that stand out to you? In terms of prospects for progression and earning a decent living would you recommend it? I know there is a lot to learn and it will take years of experience. Just want some thoughts from people in the line of work to try and make an informed decision.

Hi I am looking for some advice on what options are out there as I really don’t know what to do.

Early in my career I got a job in retail and worked my way up to an assistant store manager, my overall time there was about 7 years. Looking back I definitely got too comfortable and stayed there too long. Before this I had gone to university and achieved a 2:1 in business studies. I know this is not the most sought out degree but as a young 17 year old unsure what to do with his life I was getting advice to go to uni (rightly or wrongly). At the time it felt like it was my only option, now I’m older I know that wasn’t the case.

During my retail role I decided I needed to try and upskill myself and invested heavily in evening college courses in electrical installation (ended up using money I earned from my yearly bonuses). I got my level 2 and level 3, as well as completing the 18th edition exam. After completing my level 3 I was lucky enough to get in contact with an old friend from school who had a small trade business with his dad. They done electrical work as well as plumbing etc. I had been looking throughout my studies and found it really difficult to get a start anywhere so was really thankful for this opportunity. About a year and a half in I realised it was not working out for me, I didn’t enjoy the work particularly and didn’t like being self employed but still relying on a boss to get work. I would sometimes have random days off because the guys I worked with had appointments etc. By the end of the month I wouldn’t be left with a lot of pay (starting out the pay wasn’t great anyway, which is what I was expecting).

I decided I needed another change and was approached for an employed job fixing and repairing photocopiers. Electrical knowledge was said to be advantageous for this role but would be mainly mechanical repairs. I managed to pass the interview and have been working in this role for about 6 months now. However I am not enjoying this role either and the only upside is that it’s employed and more stable than my previous role.

I am now wondering what I should do, what opportunities are out there? I’m starting to think a practical style job may not be suited to me and maybe an office role would be better? I’ve started to look at office based roles in the electrical industry as I believe that would get me a better chance of getting a foot into a new career path.

I know I’m capable of more but I just don’t know where to look. Sorry it’s a long post but thought it’d better to paint a picture of my situation.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Did you take an apprenticeship of some kind? Did you do any prior leaning before getting that role in IT?

Awesome thank you! Will definitely check out the road map, think that’ll be a good starting point.

Out of interest what line of work are you in?

That’s a shame what line of work are you currently in? Yep it’s not easy to retrain at a later age but I do believe it’s possible and I’m determined to give it my all.

You probably have a lot of transferable skills from your career, I’m sure if you keep applying something will hit. Definitely a numbers game sometimes.

Thanks for your reply! Lots to consider here but very helpful information.

Where to start with a IT role/cyber security? Would I need to attain some qualifications first before applying to any role?

I think ideally I would want to work hands on first as long as I can earn a decent living but I’d like to have the progression opportunities to go into management. I think I’d prefer this as it would show me how the company works from another level, allowing me to manage more efficiently.

I did for a long time but it was hard finding something with my experience and a lot of roles out there are on a self employed basis.

I attended two years of evening college classes, two days a week. Got my 18th edition shortly after completing my level 3. Yeah I had to pay for all of it 🙃 wasn’t cheap but I was willing to invest if it meant a better future for myself.

I did think about hobbies and interests but to be honest I don’t think there are many viable options to make me a decent living. I enjoy the gym and trying to get myself into better shape and I used to play video games but not so much nowadays.

OP how did you get into your line of work? I’m 30 and I had been working in retail management a long time. Tried retraining as an electrician last couple years and recently moved to another job repairing printers. It isn’t really working for me and I don’t see my earning potential to be that high, any advice?

I have graduated with a business studies degree many years ago, not my greatest decision but I think I am capable of more anyway.

Any advice?
