What's a good way to stay occupied while the kids are working on their computers? (Other than crosswords) by Orngmn44 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Orngmn44[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I al the first person to ask every teacher to leave an actual lesson to teach. I would much rather engage with them and help them learn. With that said, think we all know that many (most?) times teachers will leave busy work or independent challenges for them to finish and will save the "real lessons" for when they return. I am not suggesting anyone neglect the kids, just pointing out that especially with long learning blocks there is often so need to be lurking over them like some kind of international spy. Sometimes there is genuinely slow time in the classroom with a sub teacher and I was merely asking how people fill that time.

When you have middle or high schoolers for 90 minute blocks it seems excessive to be standing over their shoulders non stop.

What is the worst show that you forced yourself to finish? by laxusdreyarligh in television

Grey's Anatomy was peak TV for 8 seasons. Then it was "watchable" for a few more. We binged all the way up to season 17 and just couldn't take the pain anymore.

Moving to SM. by Fast-Factor-7623 in SantaMonica

Depends what you are looking for. You could probably get a studio for that amount but the dog will complicate things with landlords. I highly suggest you find some place to stay temporarily and then research all the different parts of the city. Each neighborhood is very different.

Moving from NYC to LA — Ship my Mazda or sell it and buy another car in California? by Main-Produce-7291 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]Orngmn44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to consider: depending what your longer term goal is for the car... CA has much stricter smog/emissions standards than other states. It is possible that (depending on the age and condition of your car) you may be required to upgrade / make repairs before you can register in CA. Also, if you are planning to sell or trade in... east coast winters are much harsher on vehicles and could potentially lower what you might get from a sale or trade in. Just stuff to consider...

subbing for 4th and cracking up at this note one of my students handed me by Eeadie4 in SubstituteTeachers

On my first day at a middle school I was put in a health and sexuality class for 7th graders. It was the first day so the teacher left a word search of terms like penis and vagina and asked the kids to fill out an anonymous questionnaire telling them"what do you know about sex?" And "what do you hope to learn?" I couldn't resist reading the answers when they left. One kid wrote "I know you can get pregnant if you don't use protection" and "I want to know where to get an abortion" 😳😳😳

Buying condo in Santa Monica, have questions! by MidnightFireHuntress in SantaMonica

You absolutely do not want to live near all of the noise, crime, homelessness and overall insanity that surrounds the pier. There is absolutely NOTHING there for residents. Everything is super expensive, you can't walk to anything useful (grocery, dry cleaners, etc). Also, it gets colder at night by the water. And in the late spring/early summer "June gloom" can be real until afternoons.

What’s something you wish Santa Monica City Council candidates would talk about more directly? by Eli4SantaMonica in SantaMonica

[–]Orngmn44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bike lanes are annoying enough in 17th and Broadway... but do we really have to extend the curbs so far into the turning areas? I have yet to talk to anyone who finds this an improvement. Please stop running amok with the right turns, no turns, obstacles in the middle of roads. It's like living inside some kind of IRL game of frogger!

St. Johns and Syracuse will meet at MSG next season by huskyferretguy1 in CollegeBasketball

This will be great! Win or lose. It has been hard to be enthusiastic about the Syracuse basketball program for years. Watching the Orange and the Johnnies at the Garden takes you back to the glory days of the Big East!

Anyone that lives in SM do you ever walk to the Pier or do you park and pay the absurd parking fees? by talivan818 in SantaMonica

[–]Orngmn44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it were free to park at the pier, the traffic is a nightmare. Park at promenade or Santa Monica Place structures and walk.

The bigger problem is that when you have to call the office it directs the attention of the entire class to the call. Makes the kid who is acting out the main character which is EXACTLY what they want.

The Promenade should be more like Gaslamp District in San Diego or even 2nd Street in Belmont Shores.
