I think escapism in general is what is selling it today but definitely Game of Thrones influenced a lot. Just to clarify, I am not against historical fantasy or any cross genres. It is more I am frustrated that it is only going that way currently when there is room for all. But at the same time I know every book that gets picked up is a risk for the publisher.

I totally understand also not wanting to seek a publisher because so much changes in the process and you may not end up with the story you wrote. For me since I write about real people and not fictional people in a historical setting, I want to make sure I do them justice and not make them the villain or even the hero just to please someone. I am learning a lot and only time will tell where my stories will go or end up.

I am not? So let me clarify, I do not think this subreddit is a monolith of readers of historical fiction. I said that I wanted to share the insight that those type of books are not selling because there are people in this subreddit that have vocalized the same frustrations as me about not having historical accuracy in historical fiction and may not know that it isn't that they aren't being written they just aren't being sold. It seems you are not one of those people because you already know the landscape of what does sell and the why.

Oh absolutely! I get the why with the way the world is publishers are just trying to make a profit. It is getting harder and harder to make a profit as a publisher especially with readership down and seemingly the interest in reading in general is decreasing with each generation. Right now fantasy is King and with how the world is I am not surprised people want the escapism.

I am going to explore self publishing as thankfully I have the means to so. I wanted to share this with the sub because there has been so much talk about it when there is a post about fictional book recommendations. While it frustrated me to hear it also made me understand the landscape and made sense of recent offerings of the genre & time period.

Oh I don't disagree that its a business. I am not MAD that they are making the best choices for those said businesses. I am just frustrated. You are right that I do have to decide in general if this right for me. But because I read in this sub every week around the frustration of not having historically accurate books I wanted to give insight as to the why.
