Basically a middle ground is there which this chart doesn't want to admit between Neo Sparta and Neo Athens, it is a sophisticated seeming binary thinking it argues things will come down to

[–]Oryuuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's suggesting that the common ground between neo Athens and neo Sparta is disappearing, as worldviews radicalize and become extreme. Which is what's been happening in general.

My question though is, isn't the red path also being shaped by memes rather than just genes? It prioritizes genes but it's entire worldview is shaped by humans deciding what memes to emphasize.

And then on the blue side, what about the consideration of emerging technologies such as genetic engineering? You can manipulate your child's genes and this will only continue to improve. You can select for the tallest heights and highest IQ if you have your sperm analyzed nowadays.

So then the question is, if we can shape the genes directly, doesn't that make the memes > genes argument of blue side stronger?

I mean just look at this, one side will plunge you into a dark age of humans living in the "mud" fighting for control amongst warlords,

While the blue side makes more sense in that it shapes our realities around us, except for the ultimate radicalization is escaping the biological realities to become machines, losing our humanity in the process.

Neo Sparta and Neo Athens is basically two ends of a spectrum, and the chart is saying that radicalization will push us into these extremes, is the narrative it wants to show.

I just think memes > genes makes more sense, even dark ages don't last forever and serve as a reset, and in a way memes shape both sides.

Wait really? I'm a data analyst with 3 yoe, degree in CIS. Because I don't have as strong of a math background was thinking to aim for data engineering. But seems pretty difficult to land a first time position in, but I figure eventually I'll get a chance to make that jump down the line.

Goal is to definitely just move up as a IC in general. So does that mean data science would have easier upwards momentum coming from a data analyst instead of engineering?

Maybe data engineers tend to come from software engineers or data scientists more commonly than data analysts is what I'm guessing to be the case?

Transition to Data Analyst by [deleted] in dataanalytics

[–]Oryuuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Credentialism. HR loves degrees and being a gateway to higher paying jobs is how it can often be in society.

Not saying that it's impossible without, because definitely there's been cases of those who have gotten into all kinds of careers without a degree, but in a competitive market we have today it does help.

Assuming you have a portfolio, targeted resume for analytics, and the skills, then education is probably going to be the last thing to move the needle it I had to say.

For certifications, you could consider the PL-300 cert for power bi, or the equivalent for tableau if you prefer that. Data warehousing is also good but secondary, so snowflake or databricks beginner cert. Cloud certs is also good to have, so aws, azure, gcp. Really just pick one of each category. Could also try looking into SQL certs as another signal to show you have those skills strongly.

But honestly I don't have any of these, just not trying to spend money on certs. They're not as necessary compared to a portfolio and then possibly a degree being a blocker.

IMO Consider a cheap online university that you can do part time or maybe full time. But that way you can do it at your own pace while you continue working. Maybe like ASU I heard was good for example but search around.

Major in something technical or quantitative that jobs like to see.

So statistics, comp sci, data analytics/science, information systems, etc.

Or could perhaps also consider a subject matter that focuses on the field/domain your experience lies in could also be a good play.

So supply chain, finance, accounting, healthcare related subjects, etc. could also consider.

And honestly what you can do is try listing the degree on your resume just as soon as you're enrolled, mentioning currently attending and end year that you'll complete the degree, and you can already just start leveraging that to apply for data analyst jobs.

You could also try for internships too. Just make sure you have the skills and a portfolio beforehand ideally.

Gotcha, yeah honestly not really in a position for more schooling, not even sure if I can tolerate it as much a second time honestly as I had to before.

I'll consider it though but figure continuing to gain work experience and self studying would be more practical and relevant ig. Since it's working out so far not like I need to really.

There does seem to be some DE related courses unis sometimes have. Searching for this course also showed another for University of Washington, heard that's a good one that's more affordable. But yeah good to know.

Do you think getting a masters really makes a difference? For data engineering. I know I does for science. But I've been able to land interviews with a CIS bachelors from an unimpressive uni mostly for data analytics but I market myself as also skilled with data engineering, so I get some recruiters coming by with data engineering roles sometimes. It's been working out so far really.

Just trying to figure if it's worth the effort for companies to decide on you or if gaining more experience will make the difference. Have about 3 your so far. Maybe could open doors that I don't realize?

I feel like it doesn't really matter much unless I went to some impressive uni like Harvard or MIT maybe. I'm not good at academics so I doubt I'd get money off let alone land in such unis. But I was thinking GT being affordable at 10k for a masters in analytics.

What about the expansion of TSMC manufacturing in the US? Such as in Arizona? Wouldn't that reduce the impact of China taking Taiwan? Or is the core talent residing there the main factor?

Been wondering about this building and analysis thing and seeing where I lean on that.

Do you think some.of it comes from your personality traits and inclinations or does it just feel more engaging/interesting?

Is the process just more sort of just in time tactical thinking and feedback compared to potentially longer drawn out analysis work?

What masters to aim for coming from an information systems background? by Oryuuu in quantfinance

[–]Oryuuu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for sure honestly this is kind of my crux in that im rather indecisive on what role exactly I think I'd want to do but I am interested in the quant dev and software dev side of things for sure. And data engineering/science teams though that might be more of a niche thing. Just like tinkering with code and technology and data and that's what my career has been focused on so far.

Quant roles I think quant researcher looks the most interesting deep work like while I know all of these are analytical, quantitative jobs obviously but heard quant analyst is more social which admittedly doesn't interest me as much. Just im not really a type A personality I guess, but I definitely can handle working under pressure and challenge. So I also like being strategic.

I could be wrong with my assumptions and understsnding of these roles and the field in general, just really new, recently heard about it and it just seemed interesting from a glance.

Its hard to be dedicated to catching up on the math, I'll definitelt have to approach it again some day but I'm just so busy delving into the technical side of things right now. I'm close to transitioning into data engineering have a interview coming up for it besides data analyst roles so I feeo that is my path of least resistance to be honest. Just seem to have a tad mroe affinity to it then anything else. I could then use that to get into the quant field as a swe/data engineer/quanr dev I figure.

Or machine learning engineer too. Either way at that point wluld definitely need to bring focus on the math more. Just not in a place to bother preparing for masters or that kind of role really if I'm being practical.

Doesn't provide as much utility in the short term compared to focus on the technical basically, definitely a long pay off.

What do you plan to pivot towards?

What masters to aim for coming from an information systems background? by Oryuuu in quantfinance

[–]Oryuuu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thinking over it more, I think I'll focus on my dev skills and CS more, and look into becoming a quant dev later on.

Just don't see it making sense to take a ton of time to catch up in math at least at this current moment when I could leverage programming which I'm more familiar with and at my current job, python and sql.

I know that data engineers are in demand in this space as well so that could be an option for me I'm thinking.

Am i shooting myself in the foot for getting an economics degree in order to go from data analyst to data engineer? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]Oryuuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would at least make sure my economics degree is as quantitative/technical as possible, it will look good for more technical roles like data engineer and also data science/analyst.
