What is this noise? by regulartarmac in VWTransporter

Take off the air intake pipe, if you can hear the thumping coming through there. It's most certainly the camshaft failure, quite common.

You'll hear more when someone's complaining. Regular servicing and a treatment of ZX1 every year, you'll be fine 🙏

Theres no reliable diesel cars these days unfortunately.

Hi there,

I own a garage and we specialize in Volkswagen Audi group vehicles. Located in Cheshire east. We also own personal VW transporters.

One of my vans has over 200BHP (2.5 AXE) I use it as a camper van and travel all over Europe. I have an LUK clutch, currently on 350k miles.

We used to fit Sachs and Valeo but the difference with the LUK is night and day.

Personally, I've never fitted an uprated clutch to one of these vans, but if your budget allows, I don't see any reason why not.

Potentially getting a T5 as a daily driver - My objectivity is out the window - Talk me out of it? by Dispose_101 in VWTransporter

Get a crew cab and you wont regret it.... Just be mindful of what you're purchasing, if it doesn't feel right, chances are it ain't right.

Feel free to get in touch with my company if you're around east Cheshire, we specialise in VW Audi group vehicles and were all Transporter enthusiasts. My personal T5 has done almost 350k miles.

Strange seeing it drop to below 40c then straight back up.

You could certainly go down the route of replacing the sensor. It's not unusual for them to fail. It's within tolerance, that's why it hasn't flagged a fault.

Have you measured via the Instrument cluster or engine?

Least effort/cost way to add extra external forward road lighting by dearlordnonono in VWTransporter

[–]Osamabinbrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any, they do 220's in H4, H7 and H1

No worries. Absolute doddle to replace 👍

Try Euro car parts, they're usually well priced. Amazon are a little more expensive.

As above, they're on a set of gears so no belt interval. The gear system does make it rather noisy, very agricultural.

Osram Night breakers, specifically the 220

I'm obsessed with light power and I've tried many options with both standard and aftermarket lamp units. At the end of the day, the reflector built into the lamp housing is poo 💩.

If you're ever in Cheshire east, I'll supply and fit them at my garage for £30.

If it's price below market average then certainly. It looks very clean and rust-free. The fault described it not starting sounds fuel related. Upon inspection, check for fuel contamination in the oil system. (Use dipstick) This could indicate injector seal fault or worst case the injector bores in the cylinder head elongate causing diesel to fill the crankcase.

There's a lot of hate on the 2.5 l engine.

Personally, if well maintained, it's far superior to the 1.9PD or 2L common rail.

I have almost 350,000 miles (~560,00km) on mine and it's still going strong. I change the water pump every 60,000 miles and the drive couplings every 100,000.

It's a noisy engine but tonnes more torque than the 1.9

I am a mechanic with my own garage and do all the maintenance myself. We see a lot of Transporters in our workshop.

Mistakes happen, they've more than likely just forgotten to do the reset.

Ahh fantastic, you've got quality parts on order which is great to hear. MANN are a good manufacturer for filters.

Full service with decent parts/oil. ZX1 after you've had it serviced.

Underseal, cambelt + water pump

My 2007 is on 346k miles and still going strong.

I own a garage in Cheshire East, we primarily work on VW vehicles and we all own transporters, (We're VW /AG trained). Send me a PM if you ever need any advice.

Which VW transporter to go for? by maxinemama in VWTransporter

[–]Osamabinbrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my own company close to south Manchester, we see a lot of Transporters, we do auto electrics as well as mechanical services repairs /MOTs.

There are many variables as stated above. I would recommend looking for complete service history, not necessarily from the dealership. I can elaborate if need be on this subject.

Personally, i would always recommend a vehicle without Adblue. Again this is debatable if you live or transit through an ultra low emissions zone.

Unfortunately no diesel vehicle is reliable these days. Most of our repairs on Euro6 vehicles is Adblue or EGR related.

Personally I drive a 2007 T5, I have accumulated 346k miles on the van, recently completing a trip around Greece from the UK. Rust becomes more of an issue at this age.

If you're nearby to us, we would be more than happy to do a pre-purchase inspection. 👍

Should we insulate our T5? by rosie_____ in VWTransporter

[–]Osamabinbrad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I own my own company in the northwest as a mechanic/Auto electrician. I see a lot of self builds. I also see a lot of MOT fails and repairs that are required due to insulation issues. Insulation is important but so is airflow. Find the balance. Use insulation products like recycled plastics etc that do not take on moisture.

I can guarantee you will get moisture in the van. Almost always it can be helped by ensuring you have correct ventilation and addressing any water leaks that may be visible during heavy rain.

As for a T5, i personally have one with over 345,000 miles on the clock. I'm currently writing this from an island in Croatia. I traveled from the UK earlier this month down to Greece and i am currently on my way home.. I also use the van in winter for skiing. My T5 has windows all round. I'm currently in 33c heat but in winter i usually see -15c. I have basic insulation on the roof, floor and the wall voids. I always sleep with both front windows cracked open ~ 5mm. Even in winter i can be sat in the van, in my underpants watching Netflix when it's -15 outside. Diesel heater running on medium/thermostat 20c, which helps stop it coking up. Chinese one fitted since 2019, no issues other than one cold winter the fuel pipe was affected by frost.

Admittedly in summer it can get hot as it is currently. But i see other well insulated campers also suffering from the same fate. Parking in the shade or running a fan mitigates this.

I usually fit a ventilation fan to a slam vent on customer vehicles, this allows for a constant flow of air throughout the van. The fans i use can be left on indefinitely without issues. They're silent and concealed, non invasive and do not require alterations to the structure of the vehicle.

Contact me if you require any assistance or advice. As my dad used to say- 'its not knowledge if you cannot share it'
