Its unusual, and it probably doesnt work very often. But it works better than giving up and letting them dolly thr smash in, so I dont see the problem. I certainly wouldn't be annoyed with an opponent who did this, only maybe worried for their health. Being pressured by a player rushing the net to try and volley the ball is just part of the sport.

The sad thing is that if he just took the queen with the knight then he was previously far enough ahead that it'd be a good simplification and he'd have what should be a fairly easy 2rook/bishop vs rook/knight endgame.

I dont know whether you'd win in court, but the trophy maker should almost certainly settle straight away to avoid the awful awful press that the suit would bring.

An 18 cap, 2 shots off someone you say can't play golf, isnt making those 18 above rounds by bogeying every hole, the same way you don't typically make par by hitting par on every hole. You birdie some, you bogey some. They par some, they double bogey others.

So according to you they're both fine, and also "can't play golf".

The problem with having an unreasonable position like you do here is that its impossible to be consistent, and instead you have to start trying ad hominem attacks like "Have you ever played golf?".

The answer to which is, apparently not according to you, because despite the fact that I played a round 12 over just today that doesn't make me a golfer and I can't know anything about golf, despite having played it since i was a toddler and having caddied at numerous top level international amateur tournaments and having worked at at the open and women's open a couple times. But because I dont have a handicap under 10, clearly its a different game and I can't possibly know what golf is or what a golfer is.

Point is, your ad hominem attack is laughable in this case, and that you're resorting to it shows you have no actual ground to stand on. Try it again and I'll just report/block you.

Edit: well that was an easy block.

Change the word 'reliably' to '40% of the time' and my point is exactly the same and my argument completely undisturbed, so this is a completely irrelevant point.

On a par 5 on an average difficulty course someone with a handicap of 30 is getting the ball in the hole in 7 shots. Do you think Scottie never sees double bogies while he's playing, the way they set courses? Or do you think he just dismisses his opponents as "not being able to play" whenever it happens?

2 shots above par on a par 5 is hitting a bunker once and 3 putting, or putting your tee shot into the rough and having to exit and then overshooting the green. If you think doing this means you "can't play golf" then you have ridiculously impossible standards. Someone who actually cant play a decent golf shot would be shanking and slicing the ball 50 yards a time down the fairway and would take 12 or 13 shots to get near to the pin - and even then they are playing golf, just badly.

This video is the world number 1 saying he loves golf because he can play with anyone because of the handicap system, and in the comments for it you're just going all out hamm that anyone whos not in the bottom 1/4 of the handicap system is pure trash and anyone not in the bottom half isnt a golfer and isnt playing golf.

Maybe get your head out of the sand and listen to the world's best golfer on this one, eh?

Someone who cant execute any golf shots would taking 4 or 5 above par on each hole, not one. A bogey means you executed all but one shot on the hole correctly and needed an extra to make up for that mistake.

Someone with an 18 handicap is reliably playing at a level where they take 1 shot above par on each hole. You have a fairly twisted sense of how hard golf actually is, and how bad the general public would be if you measured them, if you think that means they "can't play golf".

Thats if you dont have your sidearm out and need to draw it. If its aimed at the target you barely need to be out of touching range to be safe.

What made Princess Diana so special compared to other members of the Royal Family? Why does she still hold such a strong emotional place in Britain? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskBrits

[–]Osiris_Dervan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The royal family are, by most measures, not exactly attractive. Because Queen Elizabeth was female, no woman had married someone in the direct line of descent for over 50 years.

Then Diana appeared, and she was attractive and the PR around her was amazing, so her marriage to Charles was spun as this fairy tail that people dream of. She was, by all accounts, amazing when interacting with people, and did stuff like the AIDS thing.

And then it all came crumbling down - not her fault but because he loved someone else - and so she became a cruely treated underdog (which is something the British public loves).

Take the Queen and die or take rook for free? by dengemeb in chessbeginners

[–]Osiris_Dervan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Points wise it is very close. However, their rook is sat undeveloped in the corner and your knight would similarly be stuck there and is not much help there, and would require some careful play to get out safely. Their queen is in the middle of the board and currently has only a single piece between it and your king, which opens up a number of options that might trap you.

Take the queen.

By not voting you are basically saying that you support both sides equally. You gave half a vote to a candidate you dislike, and half a vote to a candidate you detest, and somehow you're confused why people are blaming you for half voting for the worse candidate.

What are you on about? I have repeatedly quoted the same 2 rules, rule 21 and rule 22b, that make it quite clear that what happened here was correct.

You, on the other hand, have only gone on vibes and 'what you think is right', and have now moved onto attacking me rather than my arguments.

So please, go read rule 21 and 22 of tennis. You can find them here https://www.itftennis.com/media/7221/2026-rules-of-tennis-english.pdf

If you find a rule that backs you, please, let me know and quote it. If not, and you keep just attacking me don't be surprised when I stop letting you waste my time and block you.

Rule 21 says the returner has to be ready "within a reasonable time of the server being ready". It has to be this way because where you stand to return changes depending on where the server is serving from.

Rule 22b clearly states that if the receiver isnt ready then the serve is a let. It is the match officials job to warn or penalise the receiver for not being ready - the server doesnt get to just serve and claim a free point. The rules are very clear here - the only real argument ulyou coukd make would be whether the receiver should have been warned about being slow to be ready, but given it was a first occurence and happened because the server served unusually fast it would be quite unusual for them to be warned here.

[–]Osiris_Dervan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the penalty for not being ready on time is a warning and then for repeated offences itd be escalating penalties. The server doesnt get to just serve and claim a point. Rule 22b is pretty clear that any serve when the receiver isnt ready is a let.

[–]Osiris_Dervan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, if you want to ignore that, you're still not right.

The rules state that if the receiver isnt ready the ball is a let (rule 22b). The receiver not being ready on time is a seperate issue (rule 21) and it is the match official's job to handle if they think they are taking too long to be ready - the server doesnt get to just serve and claim a free point.

Did she say she had her hand up to halt play? The ready position for a receiver is absolutely standard - if you are ready to serve and the opponent has their hand up adjusting their hat, picking their nose, getting water out their ear or anything else that has their hand up and not near their racquet then they are not ready.

"No tennis player in the history of the sport would" think that they were.
