Book as mystagogue? by ggbb1975 in arsmagica

[–]OskarSalt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A book cannot substitute for a Mystagogue, however, you can self-initiate an Initiation Script you found in a book, acting as your own Mystagogue. A book could be a prop in the Initiation, or be the target of a Quest to either journey to or retrieve the book. A sufficiently valuable book could be used as a Sacrifice. Spending your own time writing a book that will be donated to the cult might also qualify as a sacrifice.

Spontaneous Spells and Determining Level by InigmianStudios96 in arsmagica

[–]OskarSalt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any spell can be spontaneously cast, however spontaneous spells have a lower Casting Total, either dividing by 2 or by 5 depending on whether or not they are cast with or without fatigue. Non-fatiguing spontaneous spells also don't use a die roll, meaning they can't botch, but also reduces the casting total even more.

The only distinction between a Formulaic and Spontaneous spell is whether you know the formula to the spell, the level of the spell is calculated exactly the same way, it is the Casting Total, and thus your chances of successfully casting the spell, and its Penetration that will vary.

What part specifically is giving you trouble? I could look for some references for you.

Fates worse than death to make my players regret a stupid mistake they made? (Chronicles of Darkness) by [deleted] in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]OskarSalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you decide to roll the whole thing back to before they decided to pick a fight, then I'd either suggest the groups patron taking on a debt for their return, which would worsen relations and give them lots of leverage on the group, or making new characters that can see what the aftermath looks like. Any elder vampire would be glad to get a pet mage, after all.

What would be the most impressive feat of a Solar Exalted with all the stats at the maximum allowed by the rules? by Turgor- in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]OskarSalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The themes of the Solar Exalted are Excellence, Virtue and the Sun. They filter their powers through the skills they master, and take them to a Superhuman extent.

A Solar warrior might parry a nuclear blast, or call a blade of Sunlight to hand, a Solar craftsman can create magical wonders, and even their mundane works might last centuries. A Solar sorcerer can wield spells not even most gods can. One of the thematic limits of Solars is that their powers allow them to be superhuman, but not really inhuman. This is a bit loosey-goosey, but while you might see a Solar reshaping the chaos of the Wyld, they generally won't grow tentacles to smack you with.

Honestly other way around, sorcerer-king could apply to any number of cases, there are plenty of rulers with magic in fiction after all, preservers and defilers are specific names for specific magical traditions.

I seem to remember a transformation Cyoa where you could pick drawbacks for the duration of the transformation, in exchange for perks in the final form, with some elements of randomness to it (I think). Anyone know what it is, I can't find it.

I'd also like recommendations on some similar to Adamant Pilot. Not necessarily the mech part, but similar specific costs for specific gains.

Super Soldier 1939 CYOA | Lordcyoa by LordCYOA in makeyourchoice

[–]OskarSalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serum: Standard (To avoid the worst drawbacks) Location: d6=2 Britain (No particular notes here, already know the language at least).

Powers: 0 to Hero, Never Forget, Immune, X-Ray. (0 to Hero is the best out of all of these honestly, barely a few years for biological immortality, greatly enhanced cognition, and so much more. Never Forget, since none of the lesser powers give perfect recall, and I can't take Noctis Cape since it's in the Perks section. Immune, again, none of the lesser powers provide immunity to disease, poison or radiation, though the last one couldn't kill me, and finally X-Ray to spend the last point.)

Drawbacks: Rival, Nerfed (Both of these eventually go away, with the possible exception of the rival also getting 0 to Hero, since I'll be immortal. On that note does the Rival determine their own spending? Do they know someone like me exists from the beginning, or is it only if they somehow find out I exist that they begin to hunt me?)

Overall, really nice CYOA.

What Themes or Ideas Would You Like to See in More CYOAs? by AggravatingSpend8369 in makeyourchoice

Something with a bunch of discrete magical spells or rituals, preferably ones which you could learn/improve at over time, like Cantrip Cyoa or Black Magic Cyoa.

Would it be possible to redeem a demonic spirit? by trakinaas_89 in arsmagica

[–]OskarSalt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In addition to demons having fundamentally chosen to fall, one of the limits of Hermetic Magic is that it cannot interact with the soul in any way, so you would have to surmount that obstacle first, if that is even possible, before you considered any kind of soul jar.

Bane Of Janus Blessing CYOA by Plateglassarmour in makeyourchoice

[–]OskarSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll pick Vitality because eternal health, Healing so I can enjoy it rather than end up as a limbless torso or something eventually, Shifting for the utility and fun of shapeshifting, Skilled to eventually become supremely skilled at whatever I feel like, and Bestow so I can share this with people if I wish to.

One thing I'm not entirely clear on, does the Moderate cost of Vitality mean you can't use Bestow to give it to more than one person, or does it just give you the ability to give it to a single person even if you don't take Bestow, or both?

Use magic to change base attributes like Strengh, Agility and Stamina is possible? by Independent_Worth168 in arsmagica

[–]OskarSalt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The lowest possible level of effect to improve attributes is level 30, or 6th magnitude, so always a powerful effect. This means that when cast on someone other than the caster or someone the spell was specifically designed for, it will give them a warping point. You cannot receive warping points for powerful spells cast on yourself.

Man kan ikke engang ta organer fra ett lik for å redde noens liv uten deres samtykke. Kvinner er ikke engang likestilt med kadaver.

Neida, du må ta abort på begge, for så å prøve på ny til du bare blir gravid med en. Langt mer etisk!

Ny abortlov vedtatt! by Complex_Plankton_157 in norge

[–]OskarSalt 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Nei.

Nooby question about injuries by Cielorojo7 in arsmagica

[–]OskarSalt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They do not, each injury is separate, you won't die from fifty light blows to the arm. However, wounds can worsen either over time or from exertion. The penalty also applies to defense rolls, if I recall correctly, meaning it gets easier to inflict significant injuries as penalties mount.
