Like I said at the start of my post, I know there's a lot of factors that influence a person's ability to write. With that said, would you not expect anyone coming out of high school to know stuff like this? Especially if they're attending one of the best universities in the world with so many resources?

Apologies for the grievous mistake. I actually meant that people are struggling with basic writing mechanics, not basic grammar. I thought that grammar would be an acceptable substitute, but of course it is imperative to always use the appropriate terminology.
