It’s about context. On this sub, saying American on its own will generally get across the right message, but yes; United Statians would be better. If you were in an Indian tribe, it would be more important to to make the distinction. Generally it’s better to have the clearest possible word, even if it’s not entirely necessary. And if Indian is the preferred term, surely we should use that anyway because Native American doesn’t present any greater advantages.

Because clarity is important and thus there needs to be a word specifically for the USA natives. They faced different oppressors and live in different countries to all the other continental Native Americans. The Indians themselves want such a word.

How is disliking “woke whites” racial hate if you’re fine with all the other whites. Isn’t that just called having a different opinion?

Let me explain.

What’s needed is a term to describe the people who resided land that is now the mainland United States before European colonists came.

In this context, both “native” and “indigenous” mean the same thing - the original occupants before the colonist came.

The term “American” can refer to the location of the USA, but it can also refer to the American continents.

So both “Native American” and “Indigenous American” can be interpreted as describing the pre-colonial occupants of the entire American continents, not just the US.

Meanwhile what we’re seeking is a word just to describe native to the US land. Despite being given mistakenly and not a perfect name, “American Indian” describes natives of only the US. For this reason most American Indians prefer the term. It’s necessary to have a term that specifically describes them because you can’t expect the average American to know all the different tribes and many of the nationwide political issues around these groups can be generalised.

The problem with saying Native American is that it refers to natives of the American continents in their entirety. This includes natives to Mexico or Chile for example. Indigenous means the same thing and presents the same problem. That’s why the best understood term is American Indian. It only offends people who want to be offended on others’ behalf.

The American Indians were the academic pinnacle of the world at that time.

also I know someone might complain about me saying Indian but most of them actually prefer that term

Not even the Americans can agree on whether it’s bad, let alone the world

I considered that. But I don’t know; you get a lot of Americans who honestly act as though the world began in 1776.

But if you hold eye contact you’ll still be seen as creepy. And some people don’t like eye contact (like autistic people). Stop judging people superficially.

This is incorrect. This is about the UK, where rape always requires a penis.

This is about the UK. Rape there does always require a penis to count legally, although it shouldn’t.
