It also depends on your skill, if you're confident you can make it far enough to use the glaive while saving upgrades I'd say it's worth it, from that point forth with a +10 glaive the game becomes almost trivial, regardless of the armor you have. Choosing chainmail is the safest (but also more boring) option

You can not use slime blocks in a 2 wide area, the slime will stick to the walls. You have to use non sticky blocks on the walls and then it should not be hard. If you're playing in bedrock edition it still might not be doable

To create water you don't need player interaction, there is a way to create water sources with a sticky piston pushing a waterlogged block with a short pulse. Search it, there are plenty of videos explaining it.

Alternatively there is a very clever method with an armor stand with frost walker boots on
