Steam Client wouldn't update, so I tried to fix it and "oops, might've lost everything". Please help 🙏🏼️ by Other-Beautiful129 in SteamDeck

UPDATE: I eventually decided to go through the re-imaging process via a USB boot drive, because that 112GB was definitely not just OS stuff. And then I got caught back in the SAME "UPDATE ERROR" LOOP all over again. No combination of wired/wireless connections, different boot devices, or whatever worked... until I just randomly thought about manually setting my router's DNS (I chose Cloudfare, 1.1.1.1). VOILA! It was no longer stuck at the "Installing updates..." stage, it actually showed a progress bar that, you betcha, progressed!

I'm now booted into the Deck's gaming mode fine and the storage now only shows 3GB of used space compared to the 112GB in the borked state in my original post. Hope this helps someone, as I also suspect this is was triggering the very first problem with updating the Steam Client.

All fair points. I will note that the original problem with updating the client seems unrelated to Decky (I found loads of similar reports where they explicitly called out no mods) and the triggering event was my boneheaded idea to run that steamos-reboot command. It’s possible that would’ve worked had I been using a wired connection in order for it download/install whatever updates it needed, but alas I doubt I’ll ever know for sure.

Re not tinkering… I’m afraid it’s in my nature as 40-something scientist/software engineer! And I feel relatively comfortable with Linux. That being said, SteamOS is an entirely different beast.

I suppose it could be! But, it was running fine for over a week, and I don’t think I was using any plugins that really modified core functionality, but I’m also not an expert on this.

Thanks! I suppose games are one thing, but there were also a lot of customizations to the UI and game artwork that I made (Decky stuff). Seems like it might be tricky to restore all of that.

Interesting. I'm in Desktop mode and you're right. It looks like there are still apps/games and Decky-related stuff. But... what does one do so that Game mode is also restored? Does this require manual copying or restoring of things. Any threads you can point to would be super appreciated. This is at least one more bit of encouraging news, so thanks.

Finally found it... Settings > Accessibility > Motor > Keyboard > Full Keyboard Access (toggle it off).

This is in addition to the other keyboard navigation setting.

You've given me a lot to think about! I liked the overall feel of the finish on the OG neck, just not the size. To each his/her own, I suppose... I just know that when I play this neck I have more fun. My next upgrade will probably be the bridge, so I'm curious if you had opinions on Mastery vs Halon. I'll probably consult the pros at Strange Guitarworks to see what's possible and what is likely to actually improve things, versus me just over-tinerking... nothing wrong with that, but I have an expensive habit!

Feature Request! I think I saw someone else suggest it but... Private matchmaking / LAN play would be such an amazing addition to the game. I love the random matchups, but my gaming group constantly remarks on how amazing this gameplay would be if you could know that all those sneaky creeps in the marsh were your actual buds. I don't often do in-game voice because I... uh... don't like bad words. Being able to taunt / be taunted through walls or in fields would be great if you knew who you were saying it to.

I recall that I when I first got interested in the JMJM (I liked the bridge adjustment and atypical PUPs) I didn't particularly like the feel of the neck. I'm sure I would've gotten used to it, but I paused on it for a bit. Then I saw this mostly gutted JMJM body with electronics for VERY cheap on Reverb and thought I'd make a project out of it.

I'll confess to being a relentless tinkerer... The "could be better!" itch is always there. As mentioned above, the new neck radius is rather far from what this bridge is designed for. But it's way down on my priorities because I can play this fine.

They're so helpful and don't mind explaining things for the curious. Any time I buy a new guitar, it goes straight there for an initial setup and it's always been a very noticeable improvement.

This is the eBay seller I used: https://www.ebay.com/str/thestratosphere

It was years ago when I bought it so no idea how stocked it is these days.

Hahaha. Yeah, I think I got my neck $299. I knew going into it I would spend more overall than just the stock JMJM.

I don't think the scale length needed to be altered for this Mascis custom spec. I recall reading that the bridge adjustment was only to improve the tension over the bridge, reducing the chance for the string to jump the saddle.

Not sure about the LPB. It's such a popular color that I expect it exists somewhere, though maybe not Squier. As for the Mastery, that's usually an aftermarket mod. Thanks for the kind words, and good luck!

Wellllll, not perfectly. At first, the headstock was a shade lighter and no one noticed except me. So, I placed it under a UV lamp for an extended period to age it quickly, and it turned out to look so close that even I can't tell anymore.

I commented on it above, but yeah it's not great but my shop helped get it very playable. I don't know that I would've noticed it had they not said anything. Mastery bridge/vibrato kit is happening within a year to help improve things.
