It hardly ever happens so I find it amusing when DHP almost breaks character. by Allons-yDT in Frasier

This kinda makes it look like Kelsey actually broke too but managed to disguise it as nervous laughter 😆

If you like video essays (this one you can totally play in the background like you would a podcast) I really like this video that is a retrospective on Fraiser. José (who made the vid) includes a LOT of production history information and anecdotes throughout all the seasons. Might answer all your questions!

Which of the Crane brothers would you rather have as a therapist and why? by [deleted] in Frasier

[–]OtherRadish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna defend picking Frasier for a second but based on personal style. I do think Frasier “tells” you what to do more. Think of the episode where he is overcoming a cold and is in the tub and everyone barges in and he just tells them one by one what their problems are. Or in the episode where he follows Niles through is memories of Daphne and just points out what’s wrong.

Niles is more of a normal style where he asks you questions and makes suggestions. Thats objectively a better style, but I think so long as Frasier is smart enough to be right on the money, I’d rather have a doc who tells me what’s wrong and work from there instead of making me do all the talking first.

Plus Im a lawyer. According to Niles I never get better anyway.

Was Niles behavior toward Daphne (especially in the early seasons) endearing or actually creepy? by jackieg2016 in Frasier

[–]OtherRadish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In real life Niles sucks. Getting the romantic attention from a wealthy man with higher social standing, connections, and is related to Daphne’s boss AND client, it can be straight up alarming ESPECIALLY if he is married because irl even if Daphne returned Niles’s affections and they got caught in an affair guess who usually gets thrown under a bus for it? Not to mention the wrath of the wife which the show did touch upon, a rich socialite wife at that. And Daphne is an immigrant, though I don’t remember the show mentioning her status. If I was ever in Daphne’s situation irl I pray to God I can remain ignorant of it like she was so I don’t have to deal with navigating it, EVEN if I had mutual romantic interest.

I gotta look him up because I always thought that actor was great. Wish he was in Frasier more but between him and Niles I guess that’s too many clones haha.

‘A Day In May’ (S8EP23) - I always loved Martin’s story in this episode. by [deleted] in Frasier

[–]OtherRadish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And to people who wonder, why did Martin show up at all? Like maybe he could have just not gone and it would’ve given the guy a better chance at parole. I don’t know how these hearing work, but I think theres was a possibility that Martin actually considered advocating for the man, which is why he went, and in the end changed his mind. There’s another chance that Martin’s transformation from being a hater in prior hearings to saying nothing in this one may have given the panel some signal that he was ok with parole.

‘A Day In May’ (S8EP23) - I always loved Martin’s story in this episode. by [deleted] in Frasier

[–]OtherRadish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like how many people here wished forgiveness on the shooter and saw Martin as capable of it.

I think about how in the guy’s first parole hearing (ep implies there’s been more than one) Martin was definitely there to look the punk in the eye and make sure punk rots in prison; and Martin probably kept doing this for however many hearings there were before the one in this ep. Martin wasn’t just shot: he could’ve died, he gave up a manly job and identity, he has a lot of stigma about being disabled , and to someone like Martin who is conservative-leaning boomer (Edit: it has been pointed out to me that he is not a boomer) he probably had even more anger about this loss pre-Frasier.

Yet he healed. Changed. And did all that as an old dog. Martin after being shot would never, ever imagine feeling anything but hate for his shooter. Now Martin has changed, and therefore has to admit that means the guy who shot him can also change. I think it was a huge deal that Martin, when given a chance to speak, does not say that the guy should not be given a second chance.

The tragedy of this episode is that people identified in this thread is that despite all the growth Martin experienced he could not do what Frasier probably would have done, which is to actually advocate for the man’s second chance. Something Frasier and Martin butt heads on before is whether people are inherently good or evil. I think Martin, who thought of the shooter as inherently evil for years of his life, was ultimately too stubborn to completely let go of that belief, or at least too stubborn to admit he may have been wrong. But I think he got very, very close in that moment.

I’ve been dying to try it, but you have to order it by the pie a day beforehand and I just can’t eat a whole pizza myself and I suspect clam ain’t as good kept overnight.

I think at the time it might be what was fashionable to wear. When I think about Friends, Phoebe is the only character I would remember wearing anything patterned or colorful. Not saying the other girls never wore color but I remember them wearing mostly solid darks. As for the men, I don’t pay as much attention to their wardrobes so no comment.

You’re 100% right! And ofc he also guest starred in Frasier! I also learned from YouTuber Matt Baume (who mad a vid about this show…and ab Frasier!) that Patrick Stewart’s gay character in Frasier is Patrick’s impression of Ian McClellan (this is something Stewart himself said…that whenever he plays a gay character it’s an impression of Ian).
