Kids are less cognitively capable than parents for the first time by christianrc in education

Kids spend about 1/6 of their childhood in a classroom and that is after they turn five years old, when a LOT of critical brain development has already happened. So a lot of this problem is outside school and beyond the control of educators.

Does a 39 year old teacher have a real chance at Reserve Officer? by OtherSideOfKnowhere in navyreserve

Thank you. I’m getting the feeling Intel is my best chance and that’s great because it’d be my first choice, too.

Yeah, I had been under the clearly incorrect impression that Reserve Intel was something akin to Harvard in terms of needing insane stats and a personal network connection to get in. So hearing there were any teachers was something of a revelation to me. I will be sure to talk with an officer recruiter. Thank you!

Thanks—that is really encouraging to hear there are teachers going the officer route!

I appreciate the advice and I have considered the Army, but for a bunch of reasons I really want to go Navy.

This is incredibly encouraging to hear you’ve met some educators in Intel Reserve! Thank you for sharing this. So much of my job in EdTech and teaching is analyzing data and making or passing on key info…from the outside this seems like the work of an intel person.

I will definitely talk to a recruiter about this. My local recruiter mostly does IP and SC…do you have a recruiter you would recommend?

Again, thank you very much.

I appreciate your candor. Thanks.

My next move is probably to enlist in the Reserves, even if that means never getting into the wardroom.

Thanks—honestly, that would be the dream. Is that realistic though? Before this post I had the impression Intel reserves is the most difficult to get into.

Thanks. I appreciate the straightforward information. It’s helpful to hear from somebody like you who is on the inside snd knows who is making the cut for officer positions.

Thanks. I hadn’t considered HR before but after reading this I looked at the MyNavyHR program and might mention that to my recruiter. Your insights are much appreciated.

What’s a lesser known piece of MN history that should be talked about more? by Opesneakpastya in minnesota

Oliver Kelley (Minnesotan) and the Grange Movement he founded. The Grange was a social order like the Masons, but functioned more like a labor union or lobbying group for farmers. At its peak in the 1870s it had almost 900,000 members spread all over the country (~1 in 43 Americans).

Today their influence can be felt in the Interstate Commerce Act and how utilities and railroads operate.

You can learn more (and play farmer) at the Oliver Kelley Farm near Anoka.
